Not Why We Can't, But Why Can't We

Dear Readers:

Welcome to 2012. It may be a new year, however the same old garbage, all still un-resolved. As usual at the end of last year, you were inundated with various top ten lists. The one that intrigued me was posted by various news outlets on the top ten stories of 2011. What was not number one on any list was the economy. In fact I did not read one list where the economy was in the top 5. This explains why our elected officials are out of touch with us, the media they read is out of touch with us.

In New York there are two major possible private sector job creators on the horizon. One is hydro-fracking, the other is casino gambling. Both are viewed favorably by our Governor, who must answer to the whole state. In the case of casino gambling, we will need a constitutional amendment. The Governor wants the legislature to pass one this year to start the process. We will not get to the end, which is a public referendum, till 2013 at the earliest. However, you have legislators in both houses that represent small fractions of the state that stand in the way. On this the Governor, who represents the whole state is right, there should be a public referendum and let the people decide.

The other, hydro-fracking has become a major controversy. Our Governor thinks it is doable. Our DEC thinks it is doable. Both want major restrictions as not to affect our drinking water and people's well waters. Nobody argues with that. These areas are but a small part of what is available. Yet, you have the usual anti-energy groups spending vast amounts of money to prevent any hydro-fracking. You have various representatives, again representing small fractions of the state, trying to have it both ways by saying we should do this, but must talk about it longer, maybe as long as another year or two. It is interesting to note that those representatives in the affected areas are not major objectors.

Our Governor, who represents the whole state, realizes that both these industries are happening in surrounding states and are draining resources and people from New York to them. As the industries are realities around us, it is foolish to stick your head in the sand and believe it does not affect you, even though your particular area may not be directly affected.

All possible revenues and jobs that will create those revenues that leave the state affect you, as you will responsible for picking up the lack of revenue. It keeps new York beholden on Wall Street as the major revenue source. In this age of computers, we are finding out that investors and those that make those investments do no need to be based in New York anymore.

You actually increase revenue to the state not by raising taxes, but by allowing private industries to create jobs and opportunities that increase the flow of revenue to the state. In this latter scenario, both the state and the people win. That is compromise I can live with. It is imperative to change the debate from why we can not do something, to how can we make this happen. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.
