There Is No Free Lunch

Drear Readers:

There is No Free Lunch:

To remind you, I am part owner of a taxi company. The final quarter of 2011 taxes were due on 01/31/12. In the packet I received from my accounting firm of Dewey-Cheetum & Howe, there was a new tax to be paid. Even as a small company it is in the hundreds of dollars. This is to repay the Federal Government, what New York State had to borrow to cover the extension of Unemployment Insurance.

That's right, every time the Feds. extends Unemployment Insurance, New York has to borrow the money. Were did you think that money came from? New York is broke. It had to be borrowed, with interest. Who do you think is on the hook for this borrowed money? It is private sector business. No body tells you this.

It is another unfunded mandate that business is expected to pay. It is another drain on disposable income businesses could use to buy inventory or hire people. It is another cost passed down to the consumer. It is another example of political compassion with other people's money.

Every time this program is extended, it makes it harder for those unemployed to find work. Study after study has show the longer a person is out of work, there skill set deteriorate. This make some business loath to hire those long term unemployed for that very reason. It is become so pandemic, that there is proposed legislation to ban that as a reason to not hire someone. This legislation will force business to hire the unqualified as a matter of civil rights. More destruction of private enterprise in the name of compassion.

It has turned Unemployment Insurance into welfare for the middle class. The real joke is as an owner, though I am responsible to pay this tax, should I become unemployed, I can not collect.

There is No Free Lunch Part 2:

The recent raid on the Social Security Trust Fund billed as a tax break will also have to be repaid. This year, under this administration, Social Security paid out more than it took in. This is another first for the Obama Administration and it economic policies.

How will it be repaid? By a number of ways. One, raise the eligibility limit to between 68 and 70. Two, raise the income limit on this deduction from the current 103 thousand dollars a year to no limit, so no matter how much you earn, you will always have this payroll deduction. Third create an income level where you can not receive this benefit, even though you paid into it. Simple economics demand one or all of these remedies. They are on the docket. These will also apply to Medicare, as Obama Care removed 500 billion dollars from the Medicare fund and transferred it to Medicaid. None of these will be brought up during this election cycle as both party's are guilty of raiding these trust funds.

There is no free lunch The paper must be paid. The bills are coming due now. As always small business, private sector business and the middle class get it in the neck. I see no compassion in this. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

In My Opinion: A "Do-Nothing" Senate

Dear Readers:

What is an enabler? It is one whose action, inactions or silence allows an action that is injurious to continue. In personal life it is one who buys or gives money to an addict in order for them to purchase or score that which they are addicted to. In politics it is one who stands by while something they in their hearts knows is wrong goes on. You will find this when an elected official stands by while one of their own party is engaged in something not quite right and remains silent. This in politics is the most common form of enabling.

We, in New York have two enablers in the United States Senate. Senator Charles Schumer, who is safe for another four years and Kirsten Gillibrand who is up for re-election this year. Their mode of enabling is silence. What are they silent about? By constitutional authority the Congress and Senate must produce a budget every year. Congress has done its duty when last year they passed their "Path To Prosperity" budget. The Senate had blocked time and time again any consideration of this budget. They have not produced any alternative budget. In fact they have not produced any kind of budget since April, 2009, almost one thousand days.

This is direct abrogation of their constitutional duty. Yet, both Senators Schumer and Gillibrand have remained silent while this President lies to the people about a "do-nothing" congress". The Republican lead Congress has passed since they took control over 50 bills, including proposed budgets and the Senate has yet to take up any of them for consideration. The truth is you have a "do-nothing" Senate. That legislative body lead by the Democrats.

While in a way Gillibrand can excused for her silence, after all she hides in Schumer's shadow and does nothing on her own. Schumer, on the other hand, is the third most powerful member of the Senate and there is no excuse for his silence. However their is an explanation. It is called "politics". He, along with the rest of the Democrats in the Senate, knowing they have a complicit media, are hoping the public buys the template of "do-nothing"Congress. Recent polls show they are not mistaken in this hope.

Media silence on the constitutional abrogation going on in the Senate have people believing that it is the congress that is doing nothing. The template that the "tea party", conservatives, right wing radicals, take your pick of invective, are blocking any kind of compromise. Compromise is not on the table. The Senate's inaction proves that. What the template really means is that the Republican will not give up their principals and give the Democrats everything they want.

That is not compromise, it is concession, and the Democrats with the willing help of the media will accept nothing else. It is time to return Kirsten Giilibrand to private citizen. By her enabling, she has proved the Constitution has no meaning, only party loyalty has meaning. You can put an end this year to a "do-nothing" Senate in November. It is your duty to do so. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

The Myth of the 99%, The Truth of the 1%

Dear Readers:

I was recently described as "a voice in the wilderness" by one who's opinion I respect. There is truth to that statement. The reason is voices like mine do no get heavy play in the media because we do not adhere to the common template. Page after page, day after day, and even parts of two "Bruce The Blog Goes Bazzo" cable T.V. show of which I am Co-Host along with Mayor Of Pennysvaer Community, Bruce Apar was devoted to the Occupy Wall Street movement as if they really stood for a popular train of thought. The OWS movement and their "we are the 99%" was the common template.

Yes, even I got caught up in that template. It was because alternate thought was not given play time. Now it comes out there was a Gallup Poll (http://www.gallup.com/poll/1675/most-important-problem.aspx) that showed only 2% consider the divide between rich and poor a primary concern this election season. What leads the top concern's are jobs, the national debt, continuing economic decline, outsourcing, and politicians' bickering . The divide between rich and poor is at the bottom of the list.

So why the disparity? As I have written before, the media is invested in the re-election of President Obama. So they put their weight behind his campaign of class envy. This continuing barrage of negativism is paying dividends. According to the same Gallup Poll, people are less concerned about what they have and are more concerned what somebody else has. People are actually believing that the road block to their prosperity is the rich not paying enough in taxes.

Fact is that the top 1% pay over 40% of all income taxes. More to the point, people making under 100,000.00 paid just 7.2%, while those making 1 million dollars or more paid 24.6%. I have yet to figure out how confiscating the wealth of the Bill gates, Warren Buffets et.al. would improve my or anyone else's lot in life. Here is a fact for you to chew on. The government last year spent 1.5 trillion dollars more than we took in. Yet if we confiscated all of the 1%'s wealth it would only amount to $721 billion dollars.

The outcome would be no money for investments in new jobs or the creation of new businesses. For it is from that 1% that all opportunity comes from. It is they who have the money to lend or the business that hire. It is from them that "American exceptionalism" is begat. The idea that one would, could and should profit from their risks and ideas is what set this country apart from the rest of the world.

If the majority of the envious were unhappy with what they had, that would mean they wouldn't care what anybody else has. They would do what they had to do to improve their lot in life. They would make better choices. Right now the choice they make is the world owes them a living. ,Right now this choice represents an opportunity for the class envy warriors to go out and exploit them. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

Dumbing Down The Electorate

Dear Readers:

Eight and a half percent unemployment, the economy is back. So we were told last week. The administration's economic polices are working. The media have so dumbed down our expectations that this is suppose to be good news. It wasn't three years ago when unemployment was at 5% and we were told we were in a recession. Told you that in this political season, with the main stream media in bed with the establishment politicians, truth would be the first casualty. It is being killed with the death of a thousand cuts.

There is a reported 200,000 jobs created in December. However the dirty little secret is 42,000 of them are seasonally adjusted couriers and messengers. They won't be there in January. The fact is the universe of available jobs is way down. The truth is if the same number of jobs existed in the country today as existed when Obama was inaugurated, the unemployment rate would be 10.9% We are being conditioned to accept the notion of a systemically high unemployment level as the new normal.

Our national debt is trickling ever closer to $16 trillion. Three years ago when Obama took office, the national debt was barely over ten! There are six million fewer jobs today than there were in 2008 when we were told we needed change in leadership. We needed a new party in power. So we put a new party in power. We gave the Democrat Party control over the executive and legislative branches with super majorities.

So here we are, $5 trillion in deficit later, millions on government benefits 'cause they can't find jobs, our annual deficit is 1.6 trillion dollars. After all this the best we can come up with is 8.5% unemployment. After all this we are told that Romney, Santorum or Gingrich would be worse that what we have now. That their personal baggage out weighs the incompetence now in place. At a minimum, if the election were held now, 40% of the voters would believe this. This is the power of the media.

Now you understand the emphasis on personal baggage on the leading Republican candidates. They must be demonized. Obama can not run on his record. The Democrat Party candidates for Congress and Senate can not run on their record. Here is how bad our economy is. Refined gasoline is now the top export of the United States, measured in dollars. That's right, first time in more than 60 years, a net exporter of gasoline.

The US is using less fuel because of a weak economy, so we have an excess supply.

This is real. The unemployment number are not. Demonization is in. Running on the record is out. Baggage in, platform out. Do not be fooled. Any of the Republican still standing with the exception of Ron Paul is a more viable alternative than the present incumbent for President. Do not become part of the 40% willing to be mislead. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

There is alway a critic

Dear Readers:

As mentioned previously, I am part owner of a taxi company licensed out of Peekskill. You would be surprised on how many people think they can do my job better than me. They are called back seat drivers. They pay me to take them somewhere, however if I do not go the way they do, they feel obligated to tell me where to go, and how to get there. Mind you I have only lived here since 1955 and doing this particular job going on 16 years (April 1). As taxi's in Peekskill are allowed to take more than one passenger at a time, in less than a minute I must know the route I am going to drive that is the most efficient.

The trouble with doing something right the first time is no one knows the difficulty. This is not however the first business where back seat drivers were part of the package. I was in the restaurant business for a number of years. There was always someone who thought they could prepare food and/or drinks better than me, even though it again was me they paid to do it. Again years of experience and degree of difficulty were not in their equation, They always knew better.

I also for a number of years was part owner of a bar magazine that was published monthly that covered events at bars, nightclubs and cabarets. I wrote a gossip column back then. We had food and theatre critics. There was a difference in how I operated. I went by the axiom that no one goes on stage or prepares a meal to fail. So if my critics could not find anything good to say, I would have them cover something else. I was not going to be the one to break their heart as I was aware of the degree of difficulty.

The problem with critics is they for the most part have never created anything themselves. They made their living piggy-backing off the efforts of others. They wish always to re-invent the wheel. They pay little heed to the art of creation something out of nothing. To create a business from scratch where none existed before.

Since 1972 I have spent years in the creation business. Bars and restaurants where none were before. A bar magazine where the idea itself was non-existent. A liquor store where only delis thrived. A taxi business based on the idea that if one could count on a cab being at the train when they arrived, they would be loyal to that taxi, no matter who came next. There was after me always someone who came next.

The one constant in all these endeavors was me. I always had to be me. Succeed or fail. To this day, in all my undertakings there is always someone who wants me to be them. The people I went to for advice, showed me how to improve my endeavor, but at the same time keeping me in the equation. Yes, there is a difference between a teacher and a critic.

Teachers I have gone to have been there and done that. They rolled the dice. A critic never had the nerve to risk all. They only look at the final product, and never the effort to make that product. That is the curse of making tings look easy.  Memo to critics: if you really think you can do what I do better, on a continuous basis, day after day, year after year, then you do it.  Come back to me after you have.

Not Why We Can't, But Why Can't We

Dear Readers:

Welcome to 2012. It may be a new year, however the same old garbage, all still un-resolved. As usual at the end of last year, you were inundated with various top ten lists. The one that intrigued me was posted by various news outlets on the top ten stories of 2011. What was not number one on any list was the economy. In fact I did not read one list where the economy was in the top 5. This explains why our elected officials are out of touch with us, the media they read is out of touch with us.

In New York there are two major possible private sector job creators on the horizon. One is hydro-fracking, the other is casino gambling. Both are viewed favorably by our Governor, who must answer to the whole state. In the case of casino gambling, we will need a constitutional amendment. The Governor wants the legislature to pass one this year to start the process. We will not get to the end, which is a public referendum, till 2013 at the earliest. However, you have legislators in both houses that represent small fractions of the state that stand in the way. On this the Governor, who represents the whole state is right, there should be a public referendum and let the people decide.

The other, hydro-fracking has become a major controversy. Our Governor thinks it is doable. Our DEC thinks it is doable. Both want major restrictions as not to affect our drinking water and people's well waters. Nobody argues with that. These areas are but a small part of what is available. Yet, you have the usual anti-energy groups spending vast amounts of money to prevent any hydro-fracking. You have various representatives, again representing small fractions of the state, trying to have it both ways by saying we should do this, but must talk about it longer, maybe as long as another year or two. It is interesting to note that those representatives in the affected areas are not major objectors.

Our Governor, who represents the whole state, realizes that both these industries are happening in surrounding states and are draining resources and people from New York to them. As the industries are realities around us, it is foolish to stick your head in the sand and believe it does not affect you, even though your particular area may not be directly affected.

All possible revenues and jobs that will create those revenues that leave the state affect you, as you will responsible for picking up the lack of revenue. It keeps new York beholden on Wall Street as the major revenue source. In this age of computers, we are finding out that investors and those that make those investments do no need to be based in New York anymore.

You actually increase revenue to the state not by raising taxes, but by allowing private industries to create jobs and opportunities that increase the flow of revenue to the state. In this latter scenario, both the state and the people win. That is compromise I can live with. It is imperative to change the debate from why we can not do something, to how can we make this happen. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.
