There is alway a critic

Dear Readers:

As mentioned previously, I am part owner of a taxi company licensed out of Peekskill. You would be surprised on how many people think they can do my job better than me. They are called back seat drivers. They pay me to take them somewhere, however if I do not go the way they do, they feel obligated to tell me where to go, and how to get there. Mind you I have only lived here since 1955 and doing this particular job going on 16 years (April 1). As taxi's in Peekskill are allowed to take more than one passenger at a time, in less than a minute I must know the route I am going to drive that is the most efficient.

The trouble with doing something right the first time is no one knows the difficulty. This is not however the first business where back seat drivers were part of the package. I was in the restaurant business for a number of years. There was always someone who thought they could prepare food and/or drinks better than me, even though it again was me they paid to do it. Again years of experience and degree of difficulty were not in their equation, They always knew better.

I also for a number of years was part owner of a bar magazine that was published monthly that covered events at bars, nightclubs and cabarets. I wrote a gossip column back then. We had food and theatre critics. There was a difference in how I operated. I went by the axiom that no one goes on stage or prepares a meal to fail. So if my critics could not find anything good to say, I would have them cover something else. I was not going to be the one to break their heart as I was aware of the degree of difficulty.

The problem with critics is they for the most part have never created anything themselves. They made their living piggy-backing off the efforts of others. They wish always to re-invent the wheel. They pay little heed to the art of creation something out of nothing. To create a business from scratch where none existed before.

Since 1972 I have spent years in the creation business. Bars and restaurants where none were before. A bar magazine where the idea itself was non-existent. A liquor store where only delis thrived. A taxi business based on the idea that if one could count on a cab being at the train when they arrived, they would be loyal to that taxi, no matter who came next. There was after me always someone who came next.

The one constant in all these endeavors was me. I always had to be me. Succeed or fail. To this day, in all my undertakings there is always someone who wants me to be them. The people I went to for advice, showed me how to improve my endeavor, but at the same time keeping me in the equation. Yes, there is a difference between a teacher and a critic.

Teachers I have gone to have been there and done that. They rolled the dice. A critic never had the nerve to risk all. They only look at the final product, and never the effort to make that product. That is the curse of making tings look easy.  Memo to critics: if you really think you can do what I do better, on a continuous basis, day after day, year after year, then you do it.  Come back to me after you have.
