***MEDIA ADVISORY***
***Tuesday, February 11th from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM***
SENATOR GREG BALL TO HOST STUDENT-BASED COMMON CORE WORKSHOP IN YORKTOWN

Brewster, N.Y. – 01/30/2014 – Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson) in conjunction with Parents for a Common Cause will be hosting a student-based common core workshop at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School in Yorktown Heights on Tuesday, February 11th from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

On January 16th Senator Greg Ball hosted a Common Core Community Forum at the Carmel Town Hall. Over two hundred parents, students and educators attended the forum to voice their concerns over the new standards. Now Senator Ball is hosting a student-based workshop to hear more from those that Common Core directly affects, the children.
Senator Greg Ball currently has a bill that calls for an immediate 3-year moratorium on the controversial new standards until the issues can be resolved. In addition to Senator Ball’s legislation, he has also launched a petition to stop Common Core in NYS on his Senate website that now has over 5,200 signatures.

“According to the federal government, Common Core was designed to provide a uniformed standard for students, preparing them for college and careers. Regardless of the good intentions, Common Core has become an Uncommon Disaster. I hosted a community forum at Carmel Town Hall to hear first hand from hundreds of my constituents. This student-based workshop will now allow us to hear directly from the children that are affected by these standards every day,” said Senator Greg Ball. “My office has been inundated with phone calls, emails, letters and faxes from parents, teachers, students and community members that are very concerned with this new program. We must be committed to providing our students with the best possible education available. However, education is not about teaching to the test and it should never become a one size fits all endeavor, sinking to the lowest common denominator.”

Students, the public and those in the education community are invited to attend. Any students who would like to participate in the workshop should contact Krista Gobins at 845-279-3773 or kgobins@nysenate.gov.

What: Common Core Student Roundtable
When: Tuesday, February 11th 2014 from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Where: Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School: 3417 Old Yorktown Rd, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598

Newly Elected Legislator Ben Boykin Puts Focus on Constituents’ Issues

White Plains, NY – Newly elected Westchester Legislator Ben Boykin (D-White Plains) has spent his first month in office “working at full speed ahead,” he said, meeting with a number of different groups and constituents, and promising to address their concerns in regard to County-related services and issues.

“I am humbled by the trust that the voters have put in me as their elected representative to the Board of Legislators, and have rolled up my sleeves with the idea of working at full speed ahead,” said Boykin. “We continue to face economic challenges and strong pressure to cut costs while protecting important County services. I’m excited to start collaborating with my colleagues and others to solve problems and make decisions that will lead to a safe and prosperous future for all of our residents.”

After being sworn in to office at the beginning of January, Boykin was named chair of the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) Appointments Committee, which held its first meeting and settled organizational matters earlier this week.

In addition, Boykin is serving on several other BOL committees—Budget & Appropriations, Legislation, Public Safety, Seniors & Constituents, Economic Development and Capital Projects —plus co-chairing the Minority Affairs Task Force.

Intent on hearing what concerns people in his legislative district have, Boykin has met with White Plains Mayor Tom Roach, Scarsdale Mayor Bob Steves and several groups, including the Scarsdale League of Women Voters and Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce. Also, Boykin hosted his first “Mock Legislature” with students from the Quaker Ridge Elementary School from Scarsdale. Boykin has met with a number of constituents to discuss and resolve various issues as well.

Boykin noted that he has several legislative goals this year, and will focus on holding down property taxes, creating economic growth and new jobs, working on education matters as they relate to the purview of the BOL. “I’ll also be working closely with municipal officials on flood mitigation, infrastructure projects, energy efficiency projects, and carefully monitoring issues relating to the County’s Water District One lawsuit,” Boykin added.

Boykin is a Certified Public Accountant and former Assistant Treasurer at Nabisco. Presently, he runs his own financial consulting business, Ben Boykin & Associates, in White Plains.

Legislator Alfreda Williams Overseeing
Quality of Life Issues on Two BOL Committees

White Plains, NY – Westchester Legislator Alfreda Williams (D-Greenburgh), recently returned as chair of the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) Community Services Committee by new BOL Chairman Michael Kaplowitz (D-Somers), will be overseeing important county-wide quality of life issues during the 2014-2015 legislative term, as she has also been named vice-chair of the newly formed Seniors & Constituencies Committee.

Legislator Bernice Spreckman (R-Yonkers), chair of the Seniors & Constituencies Committee, requested that Williams serve as vice-chair last week at the committee’s organizational meeting

“The County provides important programs and services for our residents that require legislative oversight and continuing advocacy,” said Williams. “I look forward to continuing this work at the Board of Legislators, which also gives a voice to those in need of the County’s assistance.”

The BOL Committee on Seniors & Constituencies will cover issues related to Seniors, Disabled, LGBT, Women and Youth, while the BOL Community Services Committee is charged with oversight of the County Board of Health, Department of Social Services and Community Mental Health.

Because the oversight for Youth programs and services was formerly undertaken by the BOL Community Services Committee, Spreckman assured Williams that the two committees could meet jointly when tasked to handle issues regarding youth health and safety.

Formerly the Town Clerk of Greenburgh, Williams was elected to the BOL in 2009. Her professional career includes several years with the NY State Education Department and the NY State Department of Labor, as well as with Mount Sinai Medical Center and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where she specialized in human resource administration, executive training, capital development and risk management.

For the 2014-2015 term, Williams noted that she will be focusing on how to improve communications between police officers and emotionally disturbed residents, along with issues relating to youth incarceration, services for seniors, youth mentoring and violence prevention.

“The complex issues relating to the quality of life for Westchester residents deserve careful attention and oversight by the Board of Legislators,” said Williams. “I plan on advancing toward goals that will safeguard and strengthen our communities for the foreseeable future.”

Lalor's Bipartisan Support for Plan to Save $50 Million

Albany, NY – (1/31/14) – Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R,C,I-Fishkill) is endorsing State Senator Cecilia Tkacyk's (D) proposal to require New York State to reimburse counties if Albany doesn't reach an agreement to hold state and federal primaries on the same date. Holding two separate primaries will cost taxpayers an additional $50 million, a cost Albany passes on to local governments as an unfunded mandate. Tkacyk's proposal puts pressure on Albany to consolidate the primaries and save tax dollars.
"Some Albany lawmakers try to claim that Albany is less dysfunctional than Washington," said Lalor. "If we blow 50 million tax dollars on an unnecessary election and disenfranchise our overseas military voters just to protect a few incumbents, the New York State Legislature is exponentially more dysfunctional than the U.S. Congress. This is a shockingly simple way to save $50 million. A September primary costs more and disenfranchises overseas military voters who won't receive their ballots in time."

Lalor added, "If Albany won't move the primary to August or June, we should definitely reimburse counties for the unfunded mandate. The $50 million to hold an extra primary comes from local property taxes. Governor Cuomo claims he wants to keep property taxes down, but we can't do that by piling another, unnecessary cost onto local governments. This is common sense and a proposal both sides can support."

Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor, a former teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes in Poughkeepsie, is a Marine Corps veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and a frequent guest on the Fox News Channel. Lalor is of counsel to the law firm Gaines, Novick, Ponzini, Cossu & Venditti. He is a graduate of John Jay High School, Providence College and Pace Law School and lives in Fishkill with his wife Mary Jo and their four young children Katie, Riley, Mikey and Kieran Jr..
