A "FINE" MESS IN CORTLANDT

Dear Readers:

A person (not me) gets a ticket in the Town Of Cortlandt for a rolling stop. You know the kind of stop you see State Troopers make all the time while talking on their cell phones. This person does not contest this ticket, even though in my opinion it is hypocritical for Troopers to give this kind of ticket as they are practitioners of this kind of stop, same as cell phone tickets. I really have a problem with do as I say, not as I do. However I digress.

This person goes to the Cortlandt Court House on Heady Street Monday to pay the fine at 4:30 PM only to find they close at 4PM per the sign on the door. So they come back Tuesday at 3:35 PM only to find they are closed again. This person walks in and the person behind the desk look up and says "what do you want"? It is explained that they are here to pay a ticket, at which time they are told the clerks office closes at 3:30 PM. When told the sign on the door says 4 PM this person is told that's when the building closes.

You would think that the time the clerk office closes would be posted also. You would think a little courtesy would be in order,, after all this person pays taxes to Cortlandt and therefore pays the person behind the desk's salary. So far this person has lost two days trying to pay this ticket for no reason other than lack of proper information. I read the "notice to appear" and how much the fine was and no where on this page was a time of office hours posted. BTW this person recieved three notices on the same ticket on the same days mail.

I realize to those keepers of the gate at the court house, these people who receive ticket are nefarious criminals to be treated with contempt, or at least that's how it seems. However, I think the powers that be in Cortlandt should see to it that when the notice to appear in court and the fine to be paid is sent, the hours to pay if one is not contesting the ticket should also be on the notice. I also think a little courtesy would also be in order.

Riders may have noticed construction at many Metro-North stations, including the Ossining and Scarborough stations and construction will start with a new ferry dock project in Ossining. The Assemblywoman and Mr. Permut also talk about the possibility of a station on the West Side of Manhattan.

A MESSAGE FROM MARK DREXEL:
Partisan Gap in Obama Job Approval Widest in Modern Era
Pew Research Center -

For all of his hopes about bipartisanship, Barack Obama has the most polarized early job approval ratings of any president in the past four decades. The 61-point partisan gap in opinions about Obama's job performance is the result of a combination of high Democratic ratings for the president -- 88% job approval among Democrats -- and relatively low approval ratings among Republicans (27%).

By comparison, there was a somewhat smaller 51-point partisan gap in views of George W. Bush's job performance in April 2001, a few months into his first term. At that time, Republican enthusiasm for Bush was comparable to how Democrats feel about Obama today, but there was substantially less criticism from members of the opposition party. Among Democrats, 36% approved of Bush's job performance in April 2001; that compares with a 27% job approval rating for Obama among Republicans today.

The partisan gap in Bill Clinton's early days was also substantially smaller than what Obama faces, largely because Democrats were less enthusiastic about Clinton. In early April 1993, 71% of Democrats approved of Clinton's job performance, which is 17 points lower than Obama's current job approval among Democrats. Republican ratings of Clinton at that point (26%) are comparable to their current ratings of Obama today (27%).

The growing partisan divide in presidential approval ratings is part of a long-term trend. Going back in time, partisanship was far less evident in the early job approval ratings for both Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon. In fact, a majority of Republicans (56%) approved of Carter's job performance in late March 1977, and a majority of Democrats (55%) approved of Nixon's performance at a comparable point in his first term.

A MESSAGE FROM ASSEMBLYMAN GREG BALL:
New York: Ball Moves Forward With Challenge to Hall
By Josh Kurtz , Roll Call Staff , April 6, 2009
http://www.rollcall.com/issues/54_114/atr/33823-1.html

State Assemblyman Greg Ball (R), who has set up an exploratory committee as he considers taking on second-term Rep. John Hall (D), was in Washington, D.C., on Friday to meet with party leaders and interest groups.

Ball, a conservative pushing a reform agenda in the state Legislature, has riled leaders from both parties on occasion with his hardline stances and aggressive tactics. Recently he was in the news when he found a dead goat in his yard spraypainted with “MS-13,” the name of a Salvadoran youth gang. The gesture was an apparent reference to his anti-immigration positions.

Republicans believe that a solid nominee could give Hall trouble in the Hudson Valley-based 19th district, which President Barack Obama won by 3 points in 2008. GOP strategists note that it’s the same margin of victory that Obama had in the adjoining 20th district, where a too-close-to-call special election was held last week.

The National Republican Congressional Committee kept the pressure on Hall on Friday, accusing him of being in the pocket of IBM. An NRCC news release noted that Hall criticized the latest round of layoffs at IBM but accepted almost $20,000 in campaign contributions from the computer giant.

“The message to John Hall is simple — actions speak louder than words,” NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain said in a statement. “If Hall is willing to condemn IBM for sending jobs overseas, he should be more than willing to return the nearly $20,000 he’s received from them during the course of his political career.
