NICK BIANCO'S CONUNDRUM

Dear Readers:

The moral of the great western "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" staring John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart was in its closing line, "when the legend becomes fact, print the legend." We find this to this day in what are called "urban myths". Things that are written or taken to be fact, even though if one does the research, are proven to be false. In politics it is perception. Either of a candidate or an issue. One of the hardest things for a politician to do is accept how people see them. If it is not how they see themselves, then it is the customer (read the voter) who is wrong.

Last week I wrote that incumbent Councilman Nick Bianco is part of the old guard, same as incumbent Councilman James Martorano. Nick took exception to this characterization. I was wrong, The people I talk to were wrong. Nick sees himself as a person of now, brimming with new ideas all the time. The problem for Nick is perception, the legend has become fact, and in spite of his belief, it is not a media creation.

He sees himself as quoted in another publication, as a team player in sync with Supervisor Siegel more often than not. Never mind all the four to one votes where Nick was the one. Never mind from the beginning when Nick was the lone voice in wanting to keep Eric DiBartolo as Director of Labor Relations to his latest stance on the allowing of apartments above businesses in Shrub Oak.

Nick was right in wanting to distance himself from Councilman Martorano. Unlike Martorano, Nick has been consistent in his votes. Jim on the other hand, starting with his vote to remove Eric from Head of Labor Relations, votes in the direction of the wind.

Nick has been quoted as saying he would rather see an "empty store full than a new store empty." However, when one looks at the Jefferson Valley Mall and the controversy of having a side entrance so a restaurant can stay open after the mall closes, to the Winery at St. George, to the hurdles of trying to open businesses along the 202 corridor, his votes have not made opening an empty store easier than opening a new store.

These are the legends that have become fact. Nick has the choice of believing the customer (read the voter) is wrong, or he can try to explain why he did what he did was the right thing for the town. My personal opinion is that Nick should concentrate on his greatest strength which is constituent service. Nick always answers his phone, which sad to say can not be said of Councilman Martorano, except when he is running for office. This is my Opinion, you may beg to differ.
