REFLECTIONS ON THE ELECTIONS

DEAR READERS:

THE ELECTION RESULTS AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING SHOWS THAT THE DEMOCRATS RUNNING FOR YORKTOWN TOWN COUNCIL RECIEVED ALMOST TWICE THE VOTE AS THEIR REPUBLICAN COUNTER PARTS. THIS IS OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO ME, FOR I PREDICTED THIS IN MY ENTRY " I WENT TO THROW MY HAT INTO THE RING"(MAY 2005 ARCHIVE). SO MUCH FOR TEAM PLAYERS. SO MUCH FOR "CHALLENGER LIGHT". SO MUCH FOR TOWING THE PARTY LINE. I SAID BACK THEN THAT THE PARTY NEEDED TO SPEAK TO THAT PART OF THE PARTY WHICH I ADVOCATE. THE MORE CONSERVATIVE LESS INTRUSIVE INTO PRIVATE PROPERTY AND PRIVATE BUSINESS RIGHTS. I SAID THAT THESE VOICES CROSS PARTY LINES AND YOU NEEDED THEM TO BEAT SITTING INCUMBENTS. REPUBLICAN TURNED DEMOCRAT DON PETERS SPOKE TO THOSE PEOPLE AND LOOK AT THE VOTES HE GOT. THOSE VOTES SHOULD HAVE GONE REPUBLICAN. I HOPE IN TWO YEARS WHEN IT'S TIME TO VOTE LOCAL AGAIN, AND I GO BEFORE THE POWERS THAT BE, SEEKING THEIR NOMINATION, THEY WILL REMEMBER THIS LESSON AND THAT I HAVE WRITTEN AND BEEN ON RECORD FOR THESE VALUES. THAT THESE VALUES, LESS GOVERNMENT INTRUSION AND MORE ACCESS TO ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE A WINNING FORMULA ON THE REPUBLICAN TICKET.

I BELIEVE ONE OF THE REASONS THAT DOMINIC VOLPE WON SO HANDILY IN PEEKSKILL AND HAD SUCH A STRONG SHOWING (EVEN THOUGH HE LOST) IS THAT AS A LOCAL BUSINESS MAN
HE HAD THE ABILITY TO MEET MORE PEOPLE IN A WEEK THAN GEORGE OROS COULD MEET IN A MONTH. THIS TOO, I WROTE ABOUT IN MY ENTRY " IWENT TO THROW MY HAT INTO THE RING"(MAY 2005 ARCHIVE), THAT THE PARTY NEEDED TO RECRUIT BUSINESS PEOPLE WHO HAVE DAILY CONTACT WITH PEOPLE EVERY DAY. ONE OF THE MANY FEED BACKS I GOT WAS THAT EVEN THOUGH THE CANDIDATES WENT DOOR TO DOOR SEEKING VOTES, THE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE CARED MORE ABOUT THE MESSAGE HAD THEY (THE CANDIDATES) COME TO THEM WHEN THEY DIDN'T NEED SOMETHING. IN OTHER WORDS NEXT YEAR WHEN THE CANDIDATES AREN'T SEEKING ELECTION, THEY SHOULD ONCE AND A WHILE GO TO THOSE SAME COMMUNITIES AND ASK WHAT IS ON THEIR MIND.
IF THE OFFICE THEY HOLD AND WISH TO CONTINUE TO HOLD IS SO IMPORTANT, AND THEY REALLLY HAVE THE NEED TO SERVE THE PEOPLE, NOT JUST THE RETENTION OF THIER OWN OFFICE, THEY SHOULD MAKE THE TIME TO GO OUT AMONG THE PEOPLE AND SHOW THEY ARE LISTENING. THEY SHOULD MAKE A POINT OF WRITNG TO THE LOCAL PAPERS (ONCE A MONTH) ABOUT ISSUES CONCERNING THE PEOPLE THEY REPRESENT, NOT JUST RELY ON THE PUBLIC TOWN, CITY, OR COUNTY MEETINGS. TO THOSE POWERS THAT BE, LOOK CLOSELY AT THE RESULTS, SEE HOW CLOSE THE CHALLENGERS (DON PETERS AND DOM VOLPE, BUSINESSMEN BOTH) GOT.
DO NOT TAKE LIGHTLY THE FACT THAT AS BUSINESS MEN THEY HAD THE CONTACT YOU DON'T, AND NEED TO HAVE. SHOULD YOUR OPPOSTION TAKE MY ADVICE, AND RECRIUT BUSINESS PEOPLE, YOU MAY NOT HAVE VICTORY NEXT TIME. REMEMBER THOSE BUSINESS PEOPLE HAVE TWO YEARS TO MAKE (AND SECURE) THOSE CONTACTS, WHILE YOU WAIT FOR THE NEXT ELECTION.

IN PEEKSKILL THE SPLIT OF THE VOTE SHOWS THAT THE VOTERS ARE NOT INSTICTIVLY PARTY LINE VOTERS. THAT THERE ARE ISSUES THAT CROSS PARTY LINES AND THE PEOPLE KNOW THAT THERE IS NO REPUBLICAN OR DEMORATIC WAY TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CITY. OBVIOUSLY THE PEOLPLE LIKE THE DIRECTION AND THE VISION THE MAYOR HAS TAKEN THE CITY, AND THEY WISH TO CONTINUE THAT DIRECTION. BUT A MORE AGRESSIVE AND ACTIVE ENFORCEMENT OF THE CODES ARE NECESSARY. I LOOK AT THE POSITIVE MESSAGES THE PARTIES RAN ON (CONTINUED GROWTH ON THE REPULICAN SIDE, AND MORE ENFORCEMENT ON THE DEMOCRATIC SIDE) AS OPPOSED TO THE NEGATIVE ATTACKS BY SURRAGATES, THAT INFLUENCED THE VOTE. LIKE I SAID IN THE RUN UP TO THE ELECTION, BOTH SIDES HAD A VISION, THE PEOPLE BY SPLITTING THE VOTE CHOSE THE BEST (IN THEIR OPINION) OF THOSE VISIONS. I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE PREFER TO VOTE POSITIVE THAN NEGATIVE. THE PARTY THAT ENCOMPASSES BOTH THOSE MESSAGES IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS HAS IN MY OPINION THE BEST CHANCE OF GAINING ON THE OTHER. IT WOULD BEHOOVE THOSE WHO WISH TO RUN IN TWO YEARS NOT TO BE SEEN AS PARTY FIRST, BUT TO BE SEEN AS CITY FIRST. THE PEEKSKILL VOTER WANTS WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CITY, AND THEY SHOWED IT. IT IS NOT FOR ANYBODY TO AGRUE WHAT THEY SAID, BUT TO ACT ON WHAT THEY SAID. STAY POSITIVE, MOVE FOWARD AND STAND FOR THE CITY.
