NEWS FROM
SENATOR MURPHY
SIGN THE PETITION - TIME TO REFORM ALBANY IS NOW!
Reform Banner We must demonstrate that corruption in all levels of government will no longer be tolerated.  This means passing sweeping reforms that guarantee there are no more golden parachutes for corrupt politicians.

I have been leading the charge on this since I was a local councilman.  It is high time that we pass meaningful ethics reforms that would strip pensions from elected officials convicted of a felony related to their service in public office.  We must also enact safeguards against the use of campaign funds for legal protection.

If being in Albany has taught me anything, it is the need to lead by example.  I urge you to sign my petition and join the fight to reform Albany now!

The members of our police department put their lives on the line everyday to keep our families and community safe.  The new Taser X-2 guns will reduce the risk of an officer having to go one-on-one with someone and will help prevent people from committing a crime.

JCOPE
CONFIRMS IT:
DON'T
TALK TO EDITORIAL WRITERS

"It's
as though JCOPE is delivering a surgical strike against ed boards."

New York--Feb. 8...Governor
Andrew Cuomo's Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE) sent the clearest
instructions yet to New York public relations executives late Friday: Do not communicate with editorial writers. Doing so will trigger arduous JCOPE oversight.

Under JCOPE's controversial and unilaterally achieved new "Advisory Opinion," New York
public relations executives who speak with editorial board writers in an attempt
to influence them in behalf of a client must register as lobbyists, placing them
under JCOPE's jurisdiction.

JCOPE did not address the most obvious question: How will they monitor compliance
without subpoenaing the emails, phone records, Twitter, SMS, Facebook,
Instagram, Snapchat, and other messages between PR officials and editorial
writers? Nor did the Cuomo entity explain why newspaper editorial boards are
being singled out as influencers in a multi-platform digital world.

Many editorial writers have said that JCOPE's new regulation would have a chilling
effect on the free exchange of information between journalists and their
sources. Others have warned that government monitoring of those exchanges would
be a logical and necessary enforcement step.

"JCOPE's chairman Daniel J. Horwitz is apparently a bright guy: He was Bernie Madoff's
attorney; so I can't figure out for the life of me why he is driving an
initiative this intellectually asinine and constitutionally flawed," said Bill
O'Reilly, a partner at New York communications firm The November Team (TNT).
"It's as though JCOPE is delivering a surgical strike against editorial boards.
If Mr. Horwitz can't explain what's really behind this initiative, perhaps his
boss and patron, Governor Cuomo, can."

Mr. Horwitz, a long-time and generous donor to Mr. Cuomo, was appointed to his position by the governor, and his wife, a respected public servant, serves as the $225,000-per-year President and COO of The Battery Park City Authority.  Her appointment was delivered by Mr. Cuomo.

"We want to make our position crystal clear," said TNT partner Jessica Proud. "We
believe that this initiative is an Andrew Cuomo overreach on steroids. We find
it impossible to imagine JCOPE, a body famously criticized as feckless,
launching such a clumsy attack on The First Amendment on its own. This has
Andrew Cuomo written all over it."

The Cuomo Administration has publicly expressed concern about this initiative, yet
it has not answered a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request to provide
communications on this issue between itself and JCOPE.  JCOPE claimed legal
immunity to FOIL requests.

"Under JCOPE's ruling, PR firms will simply stop talking to editorial boards," said TNT
Managing Director Jerry McKinstry, a former journalist and editorial board
member. "I can't imagine how that's in any way a healthy thing in a democracy."

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney Endorses Zephyr Teachout for Congress in NY-19

Teachout Calls Maloney “Strong Progressive Leader” for the Hudson Valley

New Paltz, NY Today, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) announced his endorsement of Zephyr Teachout, candidate for New York’s 19th congressional district. During the event, held in New Paltz, NY, Zephyr Teachout also announced her strong support of Maloney in his reelection bid to represent New York’s 18th congressional district.
“It’s an honor to be endorsed by a strong progressive leader like Representative Maloney and have his support in my campaign for Congress. It’s exciting to have so much momentum early in the race,” said Teachout. “I'm running to fight for what our communities need--like more infrastructure investment--and stand up for people whose voices are drowned out and shut out. We've had an amazing first 10 days, with hundreds of new volunteers and over 3,000 new small dollar donations, and Congressman Maloney's support is a great end to a great beginning."

“Zephyr Teachout grew up in a small town and then spent her life fighting for hardworking families like our neighbors in the Hudson Valley. Zephyr will do right by the Hudson Valley – by investing in infrastructure, making college more affordable, and making government work for our farmers, small businesses and hardworking families. I am endorsing Zephyr because she is a voice for all of us in the Hudson Valley and I know she will fight to get results for our families,” said Maloney, the first member of Congress to endorse Teachout.

Teachout is a leading advocate against corruption in politics who ran for Governor as an independent Democrat in 2014. She grew up in a rural county a few hours from her home in Dutchess County. During her 2014 campaign and throughout her career, Teachout has become known for fighting against corruption on behalf of ordinary citizens who have lost their voice to political insiders, her support of public education, and her advocacy for renewable energy technologies.

Maloney joins the majority of the 19th district’s Democratic county leaders, along with the campaign finance group End Citizens United, in supporting Teachout.

The 19th congressional district consists of all of Ulster, Sullivan, Columbia, Schoharie, Otsego, Delaware and Greene counties and parts of Montgomery, Dutchess, Rensselaer and Broome counties. It is currently represented by U.S. Representative Chris Gibson, who is not seeking re-election.

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney currently represents New York's 18th district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Maloney Statement on Radioactive Tritium-Contaminated Water Leak at Indian Point

Newburgh, NY – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) issued the following statement after reports that radioactive tritium-contaminated water leaked into the groundwater at Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan.

This latest incident isn't the first time Indian Point has been responsible for radioactive water and unless we get serious about shutting this place down, it's far from the last. Since coming to Congress, I've worked to bring an end to operations at Indian Point because it's too great a risk to the Hudson Valley.

“I applaud Governor Cuomo for calling for further investigation and look forward to working together to responsibly end nuclear operations at Indian Point while safeguarding the jobs of those who work there and keeping energy prices low for my neighbors in the Hudson Valley.”

I am proud to present Burn Center Service Director Joseph Turkowski, M.D., and his critical care team with this resolution recognizing the life-saving care they provide."

"Burn care is a unique medical specialty, and we are fortunate to have a talented and compassionate staff at the Burn Center that is dedicated to the comfort and well-being of our patients," remarked Dr. Turkowsi "On behalf of the Burn Center team, I would like to thank Senator Murphy for this recognition and encourage all to follow the safety practices shared during National Burn Awareness Week."
