Lalor: Name the New Tappan Zee the Sergeant Joseph Lemm - Post-9/11 Veterans Memorial Bridge
East Fishkill, NY - (1/11/16) - In an op-ed in today's New York Post, New York State Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R,C,I - East Fishkill) writes that the new Tappan Zee bridge should be named the Sergeant Joseph Lemm - Post-9/11 Veterans Memorial Bridge to honor the men and women who have protected the country since 9/11.
Lemm is the New York City Police Detective and Air National Guardsmen from Westchester County who was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan last month. He was a fifteen-year veteran of the NYPD who was on the job during the 9/11 attacks.
In his op-ed, Lalor writes, "[Lemm's] active duty service followed by work in the Air Guard is emblematic of how our active forces have joined with the citizen-soldiers of the Reserves and Guard to defend our nation for the past fourteen years... Sergeant Lemm’s service to country and community is uniquely representative of the generation of first responders and warriors who have served and sacrificed to protect us since the 9/11 attacks a decade and a half ago."
Lalor also writes, "The Post-9/11 Veterans portion of the proposed name also honors and recognizes heroes like 2nd Lt. Emily Perez, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point located just 35 miles north of the bridge. Lt. Perez, who graduated with the 'Class of 9/11,' the name for the cadets who matriculated just before the 9/11 attacks, was killed by an IED near Najaf, Iraq while serving with the Army’s Medical Service Corps in 2006."
Lalor's op-ed can be read here.
