"Speak Out" with Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Highlights

New York State Assistant Attorney General Gary S. Brown

(September 24, 2015) Assemblywoman Sandy Galef speaks with NY State
Assistant Attorney General Gary Brown about various scams and the
implications of those who fall victim to them, as well as discussing how
best to protect oneself from the dangers of the latest of these scams.

While scamming has always been an issue, Brown discusses how scams have
become much easier with the advanced development and increased use of
technology. With so many avenues through which to contact people, the public
has become more susceptible  than ever to falling victim to scams that take
advantage of their emotions, with charity donations and solicitations being
just a few of the most common scams that utilize this trick.  Brown
discusses both the financial and emotional impact that being scammed has on
people. This often results in many unreported cases. Brown also speaks about
how people can identify when they are being scammed by learning about common
tactics con artists use.

Brown transitions from scams which heavily involve technology to those that
are carried out through more traditional ways such as newspaper
advertisements with falsified information regarding pricing or  supplements.
He also highlights to Galef scams that involve foreclosures, the Internal
Revenue Service (IRS), and jury duty.

Brown not only informs viewers about how to protect themselves against
scamming, but also discusses how the Attorney General's Office has been
working to help protect residents, both those who have and those who have
not been scammed, from falling victim by urging the public to report the
cases.

"With scamming continuing to plague us and compromise our privacy and
security, we must learn more about common scams, how we can protect
ourselves, and what to do if we do become victims of a scam," says Galef, "I
urge everyone to report if and when they are scammed, and I hope that many
will watch this show to learn more."
