News Release from United Taxpayers of Yorktown

Attention:  Friends, Residents and News Media

This lawsuit was filed on Friday on behalf of the trust that owns the Kopple family land and homes on Stony Street in Yorktown. Below is the Article 78 petition filed in White Plains and a quote from attorney, Phil Simpson.  Attached also is the document itself.

"This lawsuit was filed to protect the integrity of Yorktown’s public parklands and to protect the health and well-being of park users and residents, including my client, whose property is directly across the Street from Granite Knolls West Park. The lawsuit argues that what Spectra Energy and Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace plan to do may only be done through an open process in the New York State legislature that is known as ‘alienation,’ and this process which protects land in the public trust, must be subjected to the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA).  Spectra and  Grace have signed an agreement that would let Spectra — as part of Spectra’s massive expansion of the Algonquin natural gas pipeline — make a permanent industrial installation on Town parkland where families and children play, hike, and relax. In addition to whatever damage is done to the existing easement, the agreement allows Spectra to devastate seven and a half acres of parkland by permitting logging, the construction of a permanent road into the park without SEQRA review, and will expose park users and residents to cancer-causing and other toxic substances through the air and ground by the installation of industrial infrastructure and equipment. The impact of the pipeline, road construction, and toxic infrastructure on the park will be permanent. The results will be long term both to personal heath and the Town’s cherished park.  Yorktown and Spectra are not proposing a hot-dog stand or an insignificant miniature golf concession. Yet in order to avoid open public scrutiny and compliance with New York’s public trust doctrine and environmental review laws, Supervisor Grace and Spectra have attempted to dress their agreement up as being merely a short-term ‘license’. We trust the Courts will agree that there is no end-run around these safeguards of public parks and public health."

REMEMBERING 9/11/2001
September 11th was a sad day for Americans across the country but especially for New Yorkers. Here in the Hudson Valley we lost loved ones and neighbors in the blink of an eye. Now, 14 years later, we continue to mourn their loss and admire the courage and bravery of the first responders who ran into those crumbling buildings when everyone else was running away. May God continue to bless our great nation, our state and the men and women who risk their lives everyday protecting our way of life.

With the fall season nearly upon us, the nation will soon be paying tribute to veterans on November 11th. To commemorate the 77th recognition of this important day, we will be hosting several upcoming events to pay tribute to the Hudson Valley's local veterans. When it comes to veterans, there is no task too small.

Without these incredibly brave men and women, our world would be completely different today. The very least we as a community can do is offer a special thank you and recognize their service and sacrifice.

There are three stops currently scheduled. On October 10th, in partnership with the Town of Mount Pleasant Community Center, we will be hosting a free veterans pancake breakfast. On Sunday, November 1st, joining State Senator Sue Serino and Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell, we will be hosting the 2015 Veterans' Chow Down at the Putnam County Golf Course. Finally, on Thursday, November 19th, we will host the Senate's Veterans Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Sinapi's Ceola Manor in Jefferson Valley. READ MORE

Earlier this year New York State finally gave school nurses the ability to administer the lifesaving heroin antidote naloxone in schools. This week, the Board of Regents took this measure a step further by allowing all school employees to administer the opioid overdose drug also known as Narcan.

During our budget negotiations this was one issue I would not let fall by the wayside. The decision by the Board of Regents is a common sense measure that could potentially save lives. As a father of three kids, we should continue to be proactive, rather than reactive on this issue.

Under the new regulation, any school employee, including BOCES, charter school and non-public elementary or secondary school employees who have been properly trained to administer Narcan, can give it to any student or staff member in the event of an emergency. READ MORE

For a number of years residents in the hamlet of Millwood have been clamoring for safer walkways in the heart of the Millwood Business District. Since proposing the sidewalk extension and safety plan for Millwood years have gone by with little done. That is all about to change.

This is exactly what New York should be investing in, infrastructure improvements which improve safety and enhance our local businesses. When Supervisor Greenstein contacted me about this project I was more than happy to assist in securing the necessary funds to finally address the needs of Millwood

On September 1st the Department of Transportation sent New Castle a letter informing the town the project has been nominated for a 500,000 multi-modal grant. The money will be used to install ADA compliant sidewalks and curbing along the intersection of Route 100 and Station Road. In addition, decorative lighting improvements along Station Road will also be included in the project. A second component will install 474 feet of sidewalk improvements including a crosswalk and decorative lighting along NYS Route 100 in proximity to Millwood Park. The Town committed $1,185,567 to fund the project. READ MORE

Hudson Gateway Chamber of Commerce Breakfast
New York has the worst business climate in the nation. As Chairman of the State Administrative Regulations Review Commission and the owner of two small businesses, I'm working to change that. It was an honor to be invited as the guest speaker at the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber breakfast to hear your ideas on how we can give everyone the opportunity to succeed.

Reaching Through the Shadow Monument Dedication
In the touching "Reaching Through the Shadow" monument, a woman reaches toward a functioning sundial with nine, artistically-created bronze medallions serving as the hour markers (from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) which depict the events of September 11th, and gnomon forged from a World Trade Center steel beam from the North Tower. It reminds us Cortlandt never forgets.

Ossining Democratic Candidates Kick Off Campaign Season with Pledge To Ensure Fair Elections

For Immediate Release: Friday, September 18, 2015

Press Contact: Greg Meyer, (631)398-4517

OSSINING – Today Democratic candidates throughout the Town of Ossining announced their intent to run a spirited and unified campaign that focuses on the issues that matter most to Ossining residents.

“With campaign season now upon us, Ossining Democrats have once again put forth a slate that is reflective of Ossining's unique diversity. I am especially proud of how many female candidates we have running this year, but what makes all of our candidates so special is the enthusiasm and commitment they share for putting the people of Ossining first,” said Thomasina Laidley-Brown, Chairwoman of the Ossining Democratic Party. “In the weeks ahead, Democratic candidates look forward to meeting with all of our neighbors to exchange ideas on how to work together to ensure Ossining remains a great place to call home. As always, throughout the entire campaign process, our candidates will adhere to the highest ethical standards and abide by New York State Election Law. We will not tolerate dishonest campaign tactics and any impropriety by any candidate will be filed with the Westchester County Fair Campaign Practices Committee for their thorough and independent review. It is my hope that Republican and Conservative candidates join us in pledging to act in an open and just manner so that we can all focus on what matters most---improving our community.”

The full Ossining Democratic slate includes: Catherine Borgia incumbent for Westchester Board of Legislators, District 9; Dana Levenberg for Ossining Town Supervisor; Liz Miller Feldman for Ossining Town Council; Karen D'Attore for Ossining Town Council; Michael G. O'Connor incumbent for Ossining Town Highway Superintendent; Michael Tawil incumbent for Ossining Town Justice; Mark Reisman for Ossining Town Justice; Mary Ann Roberts incumbent for Ossining Town Clerk; Quantel Bazemore for Ossining Village Trustee; Manny Quezada for Ossining Village Trustee; Rika Levin for Ossining Village Trustee.

The general election will be held Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015. Polls will be open from 6:00 AM-9:00PM.
