HOW TO STOP THE HUDSON VALLEY HEROIN EPIDEMIC
This week, I joined FiOS1's Andrew Whitman on Newsbreakers to discuss the raging heroin crisis. The War on Heroin is real, folks. I have heard countless stories of the young lives lost to this epidemic and many more of how heroin has ruined promising futures. As a father of three young children, my top priority has always been creating a safe community to raise a family. SEE MORE

This month, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), a bipartisan think tank comprised of legislators from across the country, named me to a national panel dealing with heroin and opioid abuse. We met at a seminar in New Orleans, Louisana this week, where I represented New York State along with representatives from 12 other states.

I was honored to have been asked to represent New York at this important conference and enjoyed learning what other states are doing to tackle the growing epidemic of heroin and opioid abuse. Recently we have learned this war is not solely contained in New York but is a nationwide battle that needs national attention.

NCSL invited legislators to learn about and discuss state strategies to ensure patient access to responsible pain management. Key objectives of the summit included convening health legislators to learn more about chronic pain, pain management and reducing prescription drug abuse responsibly, and giving us the ability to ask questions of national experts on these important topics. Founded in 1975, NCSL has provided states with tools, information and resources needed to craft legislation to address difficult problems. READ MORE

This week, we hosted the second of five prescription drug drop off events as part of the effort to remove dangerous medications from residents' medicine cabinets.

Having just returned from representing New York State at the National Conference of State Legislatures' conference on responsible pain management, we know there is a clear correlation between medication abuse and heroin addiction. Properly disposing of medications, and not flushing them down the toilet, is a crucial step in our ongoing battle against the heroin and opioid epidemic that is now recognized nationwide.

We collected over 150 pounds of medications that will be incinerated so they do not end up polluting or waterways or falling into the wrong hands. We will be hosting additional medication drop off events in Carmel on July 30th, Mt. Pleasant on August 14th and Lewisboro on August 27th. READ MORE SEE MORE

Senator Terrence Murphy and Local Officials to Call for Passage of Grade Crossing Safety Legislation
KATONAH, NY - According to the Federal Railroad Administration Office of Safety, the grade crossing at the Katonah Train Station continues to be ranked as one of, if not the most, dangerous in the Hudson Valley.  Following the horrific accident in Valhalla this past February, Senator Terrence Murphy introduced several measures to improve grade crossing safety.

One such bill, S.5238 would allow municipalities the ability to install traffic cameras at these dangerous intersections in an effort to decrease the number of vehicular accidents at railroad grade crossings.  At Monday's press conference, local officials will join Senator Murphy in calling for the Assembly to pass this important piece of legislation.

The Katonah grade crossing services commuters in Somers and Katonah-Lewisboro.
