MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
This weekend is about one thing and one thing only, and that is remembering the sacrifice of those who gave everything in service to our great country. Please take the time to honor those who have died to secure the freedoms which we enjoy. Without them, our way of life would not be possible.

Memorial Day epitomizes what it means to be an American. To all those who have served, past and present, and their families, thank you for your service, and welcome home.

New York is in line to receive yet another windfall legal settlement, from a $600 million penalty against Deutsche Bank for manipulating the London Interbank Offered Rate. I think the funds should be used to make the largest clean water infrastructure investment in state history by directing the funds toward municipal separate stormwater sewer systems, or MS-4s. The Journal News and Time Warner Cable have more on my plan.

Clean water is perhaps the most basic and essential service government can provide. Albany has told the towns in our district they need to come up with $400 million worth of improvements to scrub phosphorous out of New York City's reservoirs, yet they haven't spent a nickel on this unfunded mandate.

We know that the tax cap cannot be effective over the long-term without mandate relief, and now that we've voted to make it permanent, I'm pushing fundamental mandate relief for our communities. READ MORE

This week I honored a dozen women from across the 40th Senate District. These accomplished women were nominated by their hometowns and represent a wide array of achievements which stand as a model of altruism, selflessness and bravery for all residents of the Hudson Valley.

I'm proud to recognize and honor outstanding women who have made our community a better place through achievement in business, charitable works, education, the arts, from all walks of life. The Senate's Women of Distinction Program rightfully applauds the personal achievements and career successes of outstanding women. This program is truly one of the highlights of the year serving as your Senator. Click here to meet the 2015 Women of Distinction.

In addition to the traditional program, I also awarded the Liberty Medal to 19 year old Riley Dejong of Lewisboro for her acts of valor at the scene of the Metro North train crash on February 3, 2015 in Valhalla. Riley, who was on the train, stayed on the scene to put out the fire that had engulfed the train car, rescuing one person from the flames and dragging another to safety. READ MORE

News 12: Lawmakers promote water safety
May is Water Safety Month
With the coming Memorial Day weekend about to mark the unofficial start of summer, I was joined by Putnam County Officials to raise awareness about water safety.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ten people lose their lives to drowning every day.

In the 40th Senate District we have a number of lakes, ponds, streams and rivers that if not properly respected could cause great tragedy. Here at Lake Mahopac we are reminded about the importance of not only safety in the water but on the water with our boats and jet skis. By taking common sense precautions we can ensure a safe summer for everyone.

As of this April, boaters are now able to take the required state safety course online. Individuals born on or after May 1, 1996 are required to complete an approved course on boater education in order to operate a motorboat. READ MORE SEE MORE LEARN MORE

New York State Veterans Hall of Fame
Beekman's Marc Coviello retired from the United States Army after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. He received the Purple Heart and the Commendation Medal for his heroic acts in the line of duty. It was an incredible honor to have our state recognize Marc's service, sacrifice and courage in Albany at the Veteran's Hall of Fame.

Battle of Pines Bridge Monument Bricklaying Dedication
I was honored to join the Yorktown Historical Society to pay our respects to the first veterans that gave their last full measure of devotion to our nation here in Yorktown. The Pines Bridge momument will be a testament to the soldiers of the 1st Rhode Island under Col. Christopher Greene, comprised of African Americans, Native Americas and European-American settlers who sacrificed their lives defending the Pines Bridge Pass over the Croton River during the Revolutionary War. Thank you to everyone who has donated a brick to help support the construction of the monument. You can donate to the effort here.

2015 New York State EMS Week
We had a moving ceremony to kick-off National Emergency Medical Services Week that culminated with the passage of a resolution proclaiming New York State EMS week as a tribute to those EMS personnel whose extraordinary achievements save lives, which as a former EMT, was particularly gratifying.

Fund Our Schools Rally
I stood with my friends from Yonkers to call for more funding for our schools. Westchester gets shortchanged by a school funding formula that is patently unfair to our districts. I am fighting each and every day for a new formula that puts Westchester schools on a level playing field with the rest of the State and corrects this inequity. After all, there is no better investment we can make than in our kids education.
