The Most Dangerous Intersection...

The natural preparation for survival of most animals is a matter of life or death. How long would the meaty monochromatic skunk survive without its repelling odor sac? Or, the common deer, which cannot see well or in color, but possesses a keen sense of smell and acute motion vision. Or, the defenseless mouse, which has a good bite but is evasive and can play dead with the best opossum, fooling most prey into setting it down and watching it escape.
Despite their apparent lack of defense against predators, all of the above animals seem to enjoy overpopulation and long lives. Somehow, they know how to survive and have learned how to prosper. The point: we are all prepared to survive and learn how to prosper under circumstances.
The most dangerous intersection in America is the corner of Knights and Street Roads in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The junction (according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) is plagued by poor signage, dim lighting, discontinuous sidewalks, aggressive drivers, and jaywalkers. The conditions accounted for 144 crashes and 170 deaths and injuries in a 2-year period just before the 2008 audit.
Success in small business, indeed our lives, is the intersection of opportunity and preparation. It is where we "see" opportunity in its common guise and rush to meet it by the "preparation" that turns opportunity into repeat revenue or fulfillment. The formula for success is straightforward enough, but too often is ignored by small business owners hanging tightly to the hope in independent enterprise.
Simply match product to consumer wants, needs, and buying habits, distinguish your offerings and compel them by unique approaches, practice exceptional customer service, know the competition that informs absolute and competitive advantages, know securely the "use model" for your products (how consumers identify, access, and use them under dynamic circumstances), and reach (frequently and smartly) into the marketplace to touch them through the media channels of their choice.
Simple enough, it is lost to most that fail to grow before their first year in business arrives (over 70 percent). While 7 out of 10 new employer firms survive at least 2 years, half at least 5 years, a third at least 10 years, anda quarter stay in business 15 years or more, 7 of 10 are in failure mode. They fail to achieve their stated goals.
Poor signage, in-store navigation, discontinuous marketing, poor customer service, and static product or service offerings are the primary reasons for the failure of small business, even those with up to 500 employees. This is the most dangerous intersection for American small business.
It would appear that the animal most endowed of skills and enterprise is less capable of survival than a deer, which is only fleet of foot, has good motion sight, and a good smeller (if the wind blows its way). The good news is that you can do something about it.

How important are small businesses to the U.S. economy? Consider their endowments when avoiding that most dangerous intersection.
 Small firms...
  • Represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms.
  • Employ about half of all private sector employees.
  • Pay 43 percent of total U.S. private payroll.
  • Have generated 65 percent of net new jobs over the past 17 years.
  • Create more than half of the nonfarm private GDP.
  • Hire 43 percent of high tech workers (scientists, engineers, computer programmers, and others).
  • Are 52 percent home-based and 2 percent franchises.
  • Made up 97.5 percent of all identified exporters and produced 31 percent of export value in FY 2008.
  • Produce 16.5 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms.

HUD Stiffs Syracuse on Lead Abatement Funds

Background story here

Script Below:

This week, Andrew Cuomo said he backs his old agency, the federal bureaucrats at HUD, in their attack on Westchester County.

Now HUD is attacking Syracuse children.

What does Mr. Cuomo say now?

New York sends $1.25 to Washington for every dollar it gets back, Mr. Cuomo, yet HUD is cutting funds for lead paint removal in Syracuse buildings?

That's our money, Mr. Cuomo.  We need it to protect our kids.

In Westchester, HUD wants to dissolve local zoning to allow high density housing on any residential street. I'm fighting tooth-and-nail against this unconstitutional federal overreach, and HUD has cut funds to us like they just did to Syracuse.

If you're such a fan of your old agency, Mr. Cuomo.  Why haven't you done something to get that money back.

Syracuse and Westchester need it. New York taxpayers earned it. Why did you let this happen, Andrew?

"Mr. Cuomo is insulting the intelligence of New Yorkers,
who pay the highest taxes in America in a state with the
worst economic outlook in America."

New York, NY--Oct. 6...New York's governor will not debate his Republican opponent in a one-on-one televised debate, Westchester County Executive and GOP gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino today announced. Mr. Astorino, who last year gave his re-election challenger in Westchester five separate, one-on-one debates, has accepted six TV debate offers in this year's gubernatorial race. Andrew Cuomo has refused all television offers that would feature the two major party candidates debating head-to-head.

Mr. Astorino's campaign had been working with a respected intermediary organization to strike a deal with Mr. Cuomo that would have allowed television cameras into a proposed WNYC joint radio show appearance. Mr. Cuomo categorically refused that offer. (Both Mr. Cuomo and Mr. Astorino refused a webcam debate proposal that was floated in the WNYC negotiations.) Mr. Cuomo also refused to debate his Democratic Primary challenger, respected Fordham University professor Zephyr Teachout.

"Andrew Cuomo travels to Afghanistan to support troops fighting for democracy, and then blatantly disrespects the democratic process here in New York," County Executive Astorino said. "Mr. Cuomo is insulting the intelligence of New Yorkers, who pay the highest taxes in America in a state with the worst economic outlook in America.  This state's voters deserve to see and hear the major party candidates in a debate of ideas before Election Day.

Mr. Astorino has accepted televised debates with:

New York 1/Time Warner Cable/Newsday/News 12

WABC 7/Univision/The Daily News/ League of Women Voters

CBS News

The Association of Public Broadcasting Stations

The only debate tentatively scheduled -- no firm date is set -- would be a local debate held in Buffalo that will include minor party candidates, cutting in half the time Mr. Astorino and Mr. Cuomo will have to discuss key issues, like tax reform, economic development, the Moreland Commission Scandal, and Common Core.  That debate will be hosted by The Buffalo News and the local PBS affiliate. Astorino efforts to include broadcast television outlets have been rebuffed.

"Vladimir Putin debated his opponent on television in Russia," Mr. Astorino continued, "but Andrew Cuomo won't do the same in New York. What does that tell you about him? What does Mr. Cuomo have to hide?"

October 4, 2014

"If Governor Cuomo, Lt. Governor candidate Kathy Hochul, and others were serious about women's equality, they would have supported passing nine of the 10 bills in the so-called Women's Equality Act.  Instead, they callously exploited important issues like pay equity and sex trafficking as as a smokescreen for the real purpose of the WEA: creating a poison pill omnibus bill as a political cudgel to use against Republicans whom they know cannot morally support the 10th bill -- the late term abortion expansion bill.

"The 10th bill is unacceptable because it would allow non-doctors to perform abortions in New York -- poor, mostly minority women would be stuck with non-doctors -- and it would allow virtually unrestricted abortions right up until birth.

"In a poll released last year, 74% of New Yorkers, including pro-choice women, opposed abortion up until the ninth month, and 80% opposed non-doctors performing abortions in New York. Governor Cuomo and Senate Democrats are cynically trying to fool women into believing that this new party line stands for Women's Equality.  It does not. What it stands for is crass politics, less safe abortions for poor New Yorkers, and abortions being performed through the ninth month of pregnancy.

"We continue to applaud Republicans and principled Democrats for opposing this barbarous measure."

Cuomo caught meddling - again
Contact: David Laska
ALBANY...Andrew Cuomo's operatives have been caught manipulating government -- again.

This morning, the Daily News reported that a tax department official conducted background research on a private citizen who submitted a FOIL request, and subsequently denied the request after learning that he works for the Republican Party.

Last week, the News reported that the Chief Enforcement Counsel at the Board of Elections is including a Cuomo press aide on what should have been private emails.  This Summer, the New York Times' report on Cuomo corrupting his own corruption commission made national headlines.

From the Moreland Commission to the Board of Elections to the Tax Department, is there no arm of government Andrew Cuomo won't corrupt, cajole or coerce into doing his political bidding?
LOVETT: GOP official denied Freedom of Information request - by same state tax official who did background check on him
By Ken Lovett
The New York Daily News
October 6, 2014

ALBANY - A state tax official conducted background research on a Republican party official - then the state denied his request for public information, the Daily News has learned.
Joe Uddo, who happens to be the political director for the state GOP, had filed a "Freedom of Information Law" request on Aug. 22 with the tax department seeking to understand why some taxpayers had been disqualified from a property tax exemption program.
Days before the request was rejected last month, Uddo received a message from the online professional networking site LinkedIn that someone had reviewed his profile, which identified him as a GOP official. That person turned out to be a tax department employee who received Uddo's freedom of information request.
Cuomo administration officials say the review and Uddo's Republican party position had nothing to do with the decision to reject the public information request.
They say a similar request from another person had been denied weeks earlier on the same grounds: that the info was exempted from public release because it would reveal personal tax information.
"FOIL responses are based upon the law, not who requested them," said Tax Department spokesman Geoffrey Gloak. "Anyone suggesting otherwise is wrong on the facts."
Wrong or right, the alleged investigation has united people on both sides of the political aisle.
A Democratic insider said that investigating the background of people requesting public information "is a political mindset, not a governmental one."
And Blair Horner, of the New York Public Interest Research Group joined state GOP spokesman David Laska in arguing that there's no reason a state employee should look up information on someone filing a request, calling it "irrelevant" whether it impacts a determination.
"The question New Yorkers should be asking is, 'Why were the governor's employees investigating private citizens before ruling on their FOIL requests'? Laska said.
Added Horner: "I don't know why they'd be looking."

Murphy Calls for State Takeover of County Medicaid Costs

Opponent Copies Plan, With Key Differences

PEEKSKILL, NY - A plan for a Statewide takeover of Medicaid was released today by Justin Wagner that seems geared toward creating political cover for a tax hike to fund Bill De Blasio's radical social agenda. Spending billions more dollars is yet another example of the Justin Wagner/Bill de Blasio agenda, that includes taxpayer funded political campaigns and college tuition for illegal aliens, his opponent said.

When Senator Pat Gallivan and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin introduced their legislation for a phased-in state takeover of Medicaid in 2011, Dr. Terrence Murphy publicly lent his support to the measure. Today he re-stated his pledge to vote for the bill when elected to the New York State Senate, which could lower property taxes in Westchester by forty percent, though the funding for his proposal varies greatly from the one his opponent released today.

"This is one of the most historic pieces of legislation to be introduced in decades," Stephen Acquario, president of the New York Association of Counties, had said at the time of the proposal offered by Murphy and others. "Counties have made a tremendous sacrifice over the last 50 years."

New York is one of the only States that passes along Medicaid expenses to county government. Murphy's proposal would call for a five-year phase out of this expense, which consumes 40.2% of Wetschester's tax levy and 25% of Putnam's tax levy.

"If Albany wants it, Albany should pay for it, and the state can afford to assume these costs because of the funding it is now receiving under the Affordable Care Act," Dr. Murphy said. "When elected I will make a State takeover of Medicaid costs my top priority for mandate relief. The tax cap is meaningless without it."

While the State take-over of Medicaid costs is not a new idea, the way the State pays for the takeover is of paramount concern when considering the proposal. Rather than assuming the costs through a phased in takeover, some groups want the proposal paid for through a tax increase and hypothetical savings that have no basis in fact, Murphy says. One such bogus proposal, from EffectiveNY and dicussed by his opponent today, is outlined below:

Justin Wagner/EffectiveNY Plan

Dutchess County Executive Marc Molarino said: "Terrence Murphy is the only candidate with a realistic plan that would allow for a State takeover of local Medicaid costs, which could dramatically cut Dutchess County taxes. Dr. Murphy's plan is the way to go."

Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell said: "Many agree that a State takeover of Medicaid costs is long overdue, but the devil is in the details. One candidate is pushing a ridiculous plan that would pay for a takeover with $1 billion in imaginary savings. Dr. Murphy's plan is the better choice and it has the bipartisan support needed to accomplish something of this magnitude."

John Testa, Minority Leader of the Westchester County Board of Legislators said: "The State takeover of Medicaid is a bipartisan proposal sponsored by 83 senators and assemblymen, who will have an advocate for a full state takeover in Dr. Murphy. Clearly this plan will be a better solution for County governments than a gimmicky takeover funded by tax increases and theoretical savings from efficiencies."

"Senator Gallivan has said that we can afford this through cost reforms and not tax increases, but it's politicians in New York City and the Senate Democratic Conference who have prevented this reform," Dr. Murphy said. "I will be a voice for taxpayers with realistic solutions to complex problems. It's flattering to see my opponent recycle and copy my old ideas, but we differ on how this can be achieved, and unfortunately his plan is pure fantasy. Justin Wagner has now publicly admitted he is in favor of tax increases and irresponsible mystery accounting, but mandate relief that comes from tax hikes is no relief at all, its just more cost-shifting by Albany."

  1. Sheldon Silver failed to report to law enforcement authorities on at least three occasions allegations of serious sexual abuse committed by his counsel and other male colleagues. Those included at least two allegations of rape.  Has Andrew Cuomo or anyone else on the so-called 'Women's Equality Express' called on Sheldon Silver to resign as Assembly Speaker, as did Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, The New York Times and other newspapers across the state?

  1. Failure to report a crime is itself a crime in New York State. Why was Sheldon Silver not investigated by either of Governor Cuomo's commissions -- JCOPE or Moreland -- for Silver's failure to report sex assaults to law enforcment authorties?

  1. A young Albany staffer went to Sheldon Silver for help, alleging that his then counsel, Michael Boxley, raped her.  Sheldon Silver covered up the assault with hush money, and a second woman was later attacked by Boxley and charged with rape.  He pled guilty to sexual misconduct in a plea deal.  The second victim never would have been attacked had she known Boxley had previously been accused of rape. What does  Governor say to her about his continued support of Sheldon Silver?  Were her rights held equal to Mr. Silver's?

  1. Sheldon Silver used hundreds of thousands of tax dollars as hush money to prevent victims of sex assaults from going to law enforcement or speaking out publicly. The payments -- which were as high as six figures -- were structured with steep financial penalties if the victims spoke out. These payments may have violated state bribery statutes. Why was Sheldon Silver not investigated for his hush money payouts by either of Governor Cuomo's commissions, JCOPE or Moreland?

  1. How does Andrew Cuomo say he stands for women's rights when he refuses to call on Sheldon Silver to resign as Speaker? Why does he continue to embrace Silver?

  1. Will Andrew Cuomo or anyone else on the 'Women's Equality Express' call on Sheldon Silver to resign as Speaker now?

Photo Cap: The "Shelly Silver Express" followed Governor Andrew Cuomo's "Women's Equality Express" bus Saturday with a sign demanding that Mr. Cuomo account for allowing Sheldon Silver to evade investigation and remain Speaker following his sexual assault coverup scandal. County Executive Astorino has been calling on Mr. Silver to resign as Speaker since the summer of 2012.

Democratic Dutchess County Legislator Gwen Johnson proudly announces her support for Nan Hayworth's campaign.
October 6, 2014
Chester, NY - Dr. Nan Hayworth today released a television ad highlighting an endorsement from Gwen Johnson, a Democratic Dutchess County Legislator from Poughkeepsie. Johnson narrates:
"Nan is not a typical politician. She is loving, she is kind, she is supportive. Nan is a public servant, she is always responsive, she is only a phone call away. Nan is a genuine person and she actually really does care for our seniors and working families. She's always here. That's why I'm supporting her. I'm a Democrat. I'm supporting Nan Hayworth because we have to cross party lines for the best person.

You can view the video here:

Nan Hayworth and Sean Patrick Maloney will face each other again in the November 2014 election. Hayworth has the Republican, Conservative, and Independence Party lines and Maloney has the Democratic and Working Families Party lines. Hayworth defeated Maloney in the Independence Party Primary on June 24th, and was named a Young Gun by the National Republican Congressional Committee, the top tier of the committee's three-level recruitment program, indicating that her campaign is one of the most competitive in the nation.
Dr. Nan Hayworth is a candidate for Congress in the 18th Congressional District in New York's Hudson Valley, which includes all of Orange and Putnam Counties and parts of Dutchess and Westchester Counties. An ophthalmologist for nearly 20 years, Dr. Hayworth was the only woman physician ever to serve as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
