Bazzo Says:Sobering Thought Before November's Council Election

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS & MAHOPAC NEWS

From last week’s issue of Yorktown News: “Another hot-button issue before the Town Board is whether or not to approve a special permit for a convalescent home at 482 Underhill Ave. for the operation of a sober living residence. Diana said he has compassion for individuals recovering from addiction, but said he believes in ‘the right thing in the right place.’ Diana, however, did not provide a definite answer on how he would vote.

‘I’m not saying (no) right now, but I do believe in proper things in proper places, and I’m not sure if it’s the proper thing for the proper place at this point in time,’ Diana said.
Siegel said the application should have never been submitted using the term ‘convalescent home’ to describe the sober living residence. Siegel said the current application should be scrapped and a new ‘sober home’ definition should be added to Yorktown’s Zoning Code.
‘Sober home is a very interesting concept that is new to Yorktown, new to Westchester County,’ she said. ‘Let’s add a new section to our zoning code that says sober houses for special permits and let’s do some research and let’s see what conditions we should put to this.’”

This puts into perspective the differences between the two candidates seeking the open seat on the Town Board. Though earlier in the article, Diana does say flat out he would vote to ask the state legislature vote to alienate the parkland. He said this on the grounds that “the health and safety of the people of Yorktown is always paramount to me,” and that “the pipeline is an aging infrastructure that the gas line people are replacing proactively to avoid a situation.” Additionally, Diana said Spectra could pay Yorktown an unspecified amount of money to build ball fields at Granite Knolls West, which he believes are sorely needed.” All this is correct.  However, his vote only kicks the ball to the state legislature, it is not the final say, which actually belongs to the federal government.

However, the sober home is a different story. On this the board does have the final say and he won’t say. It is not that this has not been talked to death already. He should, if he wishes to sit on the board, have already come to a conclusion. This Nick Bianco “proper things in the proper place” crap does not cut it.

Before anyone starts with, “It’s not your neighborhood this is going in,” within a mile of me is the Phoenix House. If back then I was willing to give kids a second chance at life without drugs, I am certainly willing to give that same chance to adults. Drug addiction is curable! Getting acclimated to a life without that monkey on your back is a key part of the cure.
There are not going to marauding bands of druggies hanging out in the neighborhood shooting or snorting their next fix. These are people, adults, who have already gone through the hard part of withdrawal, and now need to start putting their lives back together.

As for the fear of kids seeing this, well you might as well keep them out of school, turn of the TV and computer, and hide the newspapers. There was a commercial that aired during the ‘80s that said 40 percent of narcotics are done in urban areas. So the means 60 percent are done in the suburbs. Look at reported police blotters from neighboring areas, and see where those arrested for possession and purchasing are from. They are from here!

If Diana is against this proposal, then say so! If he is for it, then say so! This is no time to go weenie. What good is victory if based on mush? What does this say about you on other issues that the board has the final say over? Are you going to go weenie every time?
At least as far as Susan Siegel goes, you know where she stands. She proves her government mentality by saying we should create another code specific to this, tailor it so a sober home could never qualify, because under the existing code, she would not get her way. She would rig the system to win.

Under the existing system, people had their say ad nauseam. Just because the final determination did not suit those opposed, Susan champions a do-over. This is the trade mark of a Democrat, talk thing till they die a death of boredom.

While I am at it, enough of this “rubber stamp” crap. The direction of the Town is at stake. It is no sin to know that a vote for Diana is a vote for moving the Town forward. Last year, with only one line on the ballot, Supervisor Grace won a mandate to move the town in the direction he said it should go. The people made their choice. However in politics, according to Democrats, the customer is always wrong when they disagree with them. So again, with Siegel, the Democrats want a do-over. The way things have played out, it is what it is.

The stakes could not be more clearer. The voters know their vote will dictate what direction the Town will go. This is how it should be. Yet, it is not the final say.  According to recent polling, the could be two vacant seats to fill starting in January. At least the board finally decided how to do it. This means that whoever loses, might have another shot at a council seat. This means that the votes between November and January concerning the budget and other items lingering in limbo, will be deciding factors in who fills those vacant seats. This is what I say, what say you?
