Bazzo Says: In Yorktown: Going Forward To November

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS & MAHOPAC NEWS
TITLE: Going Forward To November

Goodbye Nick

In the interest of full disclosure, I had been aware, thanks to various sources, that Councilman Nick Bianco was planning to sell his house and step down from the Town Board all the way back in July. In fact, I was even told that the announcement would come in late September at a Town Board meeting.
Since I trust my sources, I immediately informed the editor of this paper about what I was being told and then I called Nick to ask him about it.

The editorial staff quickly confirmed the information through conversations with sources other than Nick, but nobody was willing to go on the record with the information. So, the story was held in ambience until there was something official to go with. In my conversation with Nick, I was given half-truths and promises of further communications (which never happened). At no point, and I want to stress this, at no point was the issue of his health ever mentioned.

Had I known about his health scare, I would have never closed out my column the way I did. For that snarky comment, I apologize.

What I do not apologize for is my assessment of his record. Regardless of why Nick is leaving, his record is what it is. His current champions, who had no problem with my differences with Nick when he ran as a Republican, applaud him for his centralized-government votes.

Besides the items I discussed previously, have you forgotten his “yeah” vote on the accessory apartment law, where if a resident builds an accessory apartment on their house the Town tells that resident where in his house he must reside? How about his opposition to a side door at the Jefferson Valley Mall, which would have allowed a restaurant on the ground floor to remain open after the mall closed? How about his opposition to God Father’s Pizza opening in the mall because he found the name offensive? Or what about one of his final acts, taking the taxpayer out of the equation on raises for elected officials and department heads. I am not going to thank him for that!

Yes, he gave the Town almost 20 years of his life, however it was his choice, and he was well-compensated for that. It will be sad for many people that Nick will no longer be on the Council because for many residents he has been there since they moved into Yorktown. It also must be remembered that in every one of his campaigns for Town Board in which I was doing political commentary I endorsed him. The one time I did not endorse him was when he ran against Supervisor Michael Grace last year and where would we be now if he had won? That position would now be vacant starting on Oct 1.

I have never questioned the sincerity of his convictions but when it came to private property rights (totally assaulted with the Town’s comprehensive plan), I disagreed with those convictions. His actions while on the Town Council—good and bad—will be felt by the residents for years to come. That is the one truth that can be concluded for his tenure. Looking back, I do not regret any endorsement I ever made when he ran for office.

The race for Town Council

On another front, the last issue anybody should care about when deciding between Tom Diana and Susan Siegel in November is their position on the SPECTRA pipeline. For all the pros and cons, caterwauling and self- importance displayed by lecturers in the red shirts, the fact is that it is a federal issue, and all questions should be directed at those running for the congressional seats that represent Yorktown. The feds will have the final say.

Yet, there was Susan Siegel demanding that Diana state his position on the pipeline. There is no right answer for Diana. No matter his position, it will not affect the outcome of the pipeline. It is not the reason to vote for or against Diana or Siegel. I mean if you are going to base your vote on the irrelevant, why not ask the candidates where they stand on gambling in the Catskills or abortion? People voting on these issues should wait until Nov. 5 to cast a ballot.

What does matter is their feeling about the Sober Home, the expansion of the Jefferson Valley Mall, Costco and whether or not the taxpayers should be shut out of the discussion on raises for elected officials and department heads. How about each candidate’s position on whether the highway superintendent should be an elected or appointed position or whether we should change the charter and have a Town manager type of government. The one thing I have learned in the years I have been writing political commentary is that bad ideas never die. Like Dracula and Godzilla, bad ideas keep coming back, more dangerous than the last time.

Truth be told, I am not enamored with either candidate and being open-minded is not in their job description. At least the voters know where they stand and who they stand with. As the readers of this column know, I have always felt either Illian Gilbert of Rich Campanero would have been better candidates for the open Town Board seat. My critics will notice, yet surely dismiss, that Campanaro ran for Town Baord as Democrat last fall and that Gilbert is a Demcorat district leader, yet it was the Yorktown Democrats who scuttled those nominations. Independent thought was not on their agenda.

The real truth about this election is the direction of the Town is at stake. A vote for Diana is a vote for progress for small business and private property rights. A vote for Diana is a vote for a less intrusive town government, but I do not have hopes he would try to scale back some of the more intrusive laws on the book, I just do not think he will add to them.

A vote for Siegel is a vote to turn this into a town that time forgot in regards to small business and private property rights. She believes you, the residents, work for the Town. You saw that in her desire to take away your right to elect the highway superintendent. If her past history on the board is any judge, look for litigation to rear its ugly head. When it comes time to vote, I am not really excited about Siegel 2.0.
I will vote for, and urge you do to the same, a more business and property rights-friendly town by casting your ballot for Tom Diana. For the most part, I am very pleased with how the town is going under Supervisor Grace—I guess that makes me a resident of Gracetown. I know a vote for Diana will keep us on that path.

This is what I say. What say you?
