R.O.I. By Frank J. Rich
Merchandising that Jumps

A storefront is seldom the entire resume of the business inside, but it is made more appealing by what you see from a distance and revealed of the value within by a little investment of time. Much the same as a home for sale, curb appeal is vitally important to customer engagement.

Yet, most local stores have little more than roughly made signs to engage shoppers. Stores decorate for the holidays, post specials, and place tent signs out front, but most just do as others and join in "indiscriminate marketing."

It's a poor model for engaging and starting conversations with prospects or encouraging the conversion process. Word-of-mouth marketing is the goal, and it comes naturally and affordably to mind when given license. A few suggestions (without cost) from www.wordofmouth.org make the point.

1.      Smarter product displays
2.      Customers' creations
3.      Behind-the-scenes views

Smarter Product Displays
T-shirt shop Uniqlo didn't add seasonal decorations or flashy signs to make its T-shirt displays stand out (http://kotaku.com/uniqlo-folds-t-shirts-better-than-you-do-1441912169) --it just folded them differently. In neatly stacked piles, each shirt is staggered to reveal the whole design across multiple shirts. The stacks look so cool that people even take pictures with them. When was the last time you wanted to take a photo with a stack of clothes?

The idea lends itself to a host of others products. A local farm stand that also sells firewood builds a decorative shell that appears as a cottage, school or barn. It's an unmistakable landmark that advertises firewood without a sign and encourages people to "stop and shop" for the fine fruits and vegetables from their own farmlands.

A bicycle rack and neon sign above it at a local gourmet foods store encourages cyclists to "park and shop" close to the front door while car driving patrons search for a space in a crowded parking lot.

Customers' Creations
Tons of small foil sculptures cover the shelves, ledges, and windowsills of the dining area in every Freebirds World Burrito. Customers are encouraged to make these little sculptures from the extra foil wrapped around their burritos -- and people love them.

One guy even made a whole blog dedicated to his Freebirds foil art. Everyone gets to be a part of making the Freebirds store more interesting, which is a great reason to tell their friends about it.

The parent company of the PennySaver (Chase Media Group) holds an annual calendar contest inviting readers to contribute their photos to represent the seasons. Thousands found the pages of the company's 20-plus websites and added countless conversations with company personnel as a result.

A new local restaurant held an "American Idol-like" contest for local talent, which drew hundreds to its doors to sign up and watch. They collected an email from every visitor and have grown substantially by their email offers over time.

Behind the Scenes Views
To show their burgers are made from fresh ground beef -- not frozen patties -- Texas burger chain Mighty Fine lets customers see how they're made through a giant window into the kitchen. Instead of an expensive marketing campaign, they just put in a window to show what they were already doing.

Interactive cooking exhibitions at local restaurants are inviting ways to endear prospects to sample menu items and learn to prepare them at home. Restaurants risk nothing in sales to those same customers.

A local cycle store allows interested bikers to take bikes out for a run at a trail across the street before buying. The practice engages customers in the delight of riding a new bike-an irresistible treat-and introduces them to their rental business made easier by the nearby bike trail.

Need a few ideas? Call your media consultant. They are chock full of real experiences from local stores and effective ways to save money while increasing market awareness.

Statement from County Executive Rob Astorino & Sheriff Chris Moss on Today's NYPD Protest
August 23, 2014

Today, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and Chemung Sheriff Chris Moss, President of the New York State Sheriff's Association--who has served in law enforcement for 26 years--issued the following joint statement:

"Sheriff Moss and I stand firmly behind the NYPD in the face of a growing war on cops designed by Reverend Sharpton and a few spineless politicians. No organization is perfect, and in an international city of 8.5 million residents, mistakes are bound to happen. Eric Garner's death was a tragedy that likely could have been avoided had he complied with lawful orders. We have the utmost confidence in DA Donovan's ability to investigate and reveal a thorough accounting of the facts. However, the war on our men and women in blue started long before Eric Garner's death and is being waged based on personal and political interests, the results of which will be catastrophic for the safety and well being of New Yorkers and our visitors.

"This city and state needs leaders who support New York's finest--a moniker they did not receive by accident. They are men and women representing nearly every ethnicity in the world with the common purpose of keeping this city safe and saving lives. . We should be celebrating them for a job well done."
