Assemblywoman Galef Fires Questions at Local Fire Department Volunteers

on Her "Dear Sandy" TV Show

(August 20, 2014) Assemblywoman Sandy Galef meets the spark behind the flamewith a former Ossining Fire Department Chief, John Crawford and a former
Cold Spring Fire Company Chief, Dan Valentine on her latest episode of "Dear
Sandy."  Galef's guests report on the importance of volunteering at their
local fire department.

Both Crawford and Valentine spoke about many issues.  Pre-teens as young as
twelve can start the training process at their nearby fire department and
making a difference in their communities.  Fire departments are always
looking for volunteers and not just those who are willing to run into a
burning building or be on the front line, but others who can assist with
financial reporting, support services in the fire house, dispatch services,
etc.  All these volunteer opportunities in the fire services are important.
Fire departments are constantly innovating and introducing new technology to
their line of work, new technology that can put out fires quicker and save
more lives, as well as protect firefighters.

"These men and women are critical members of our communities," says
Assemblywomen Galef.  "Keeping the community safe is a job for the finest
and the fittest and I am grateful there are volunteer firefighters to get
the job done."

ASTORINO CAMPAIGN: ANDREW CUOMO'S CRIMINAL
DEFENSE ATTORNEYS SHUTDOWN PRIMARY DEBATE

"No governor can be that much of a jerk;
it has to be his criminal defense lawyers advising."

New York--Aug. 21...The campaign of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday made it official: Mr. Cuomo does not plan to debate his chief Democratic primary opponent, respected Fordham University Professor Zephyr Teachout, before the September 9 primary, and the campaign of Republican candidate Rob Astorino today announced that it believes it knows why.

The Astorino campaign maintains that Mr. Cuomo's criminal defense team is prohibiting the governor from debating either Professor Teachout in the Democratic Primary or County Executive Astorino in the general election. Mr. Cuomo is under federal investigation by the U.S. Attorney for possible obstruction of justice and other crimes for his role in the developing Moreland Commission Scandal.

"There are just two options here," said Astorino spokeswoman Jessica Proud. "Either the Governor is acting like a total jerk -- and we refuse to believe he would do that  -- or his criminal defense lawyers have shut the debate option down. Under legal advice, Mr. Cuomo has already told the press that he'll no longer answer questions about the Cuomogate scandal; apparently that extends to debates as well. I mean, what's Mr. Cuomo going to say when confronted by Professor Teachout about his interference with Moreland: 'I'm sorry, but my criminal defense team advises that I not answer that question?"

Mr. Astorino, the two-term Westchester County Executive, yesterday offered to debate Professor Teachout before the Democratic Primary to give her a platform to present her ideas for improving the state -- and he his -- and Professor Teachout agreed. Several news outlets subsequently reached out to the two campaigns, and discussions are active and ongoing.

2 Key Questions
In a letter to the editor in yesterday’s Poughkeepsie Journal, Kaye Surman, the president of the Poughkeepsie Women's Republican Club of Dutchess County makes it clear why every New York State Assembly Candidate should be asked these two key questions:

1.    Will you accept money and support from Sheldon Silver and the political campaign committees which he controls?

2.    Will you vote for Sheldon Silver to continue as speaker of the Assembly?

Kaye’s must-read letter to the editor can be found below.

I hope you will contact your local member of the Assembly today and ask them these two key questions.

2 Questions All Assembly Candidates Must Answer

The normally Democrat-friendly editorial page of The New York Times last year exclaimed, "The Assembly speaker and one of New York's top legislative leaders, failed to provide an environment in which young women could work without fear of being sexually assaulted." The Times continued, "Assembly Democrats should also seize the opportunity to remove Mr. Silver from a leadership post he has occupied since 1994 and is clearly no longer fit to hold."

The Times was responding to a report by the Joint Commission on Public Ethics that Silver harbored sexual predators and broke ethics rules when he used a secret taxpayer-funded settlement to silence two female staffers repeatedly sexual harassed by his longtime ally Assemblyman Vito Lopez. Is it any wonder that polls show two-thirds of New Yorkers are unwilling to send their daughters to work in the Legislature?

How does Silver get away with it? Democrat members of the Assembly, including local Legislators Didi Barrett and Frank Skartados, have remained silent and continue to support Silver as the leader of the Assembly. According to campaign finance filings, the Democrat Assembly Campaign Committee, which Silver exclusively controls, gave Barrett $97,268.41 of support in 2012 and Skartados $146,031.76 of support in 2012.

Voters should ask Assembly candidates two key questions:

• Will you accept money and support from Sheldon Silver and the political campaign committees which he controls? and;

• Will you vote for Sheldon Silver to continue as speaker of the Assembly?

ASTORINO BRINGS JOBS PLAN TOUR TO HERKIMER

 "There is no question: With the right policies in Albany we can make New York great again, and get good paying jobs back into this state."

Ilion, NY--August 21...Westchester County Executive and reform Republican candidate for governor Rob Astorino today unveiled in Albany a significant policy proposal to make New York economically competitive again. Mr. Astorino made the announcement near Remington Arms, which recently announced more than 100 layoffs.

 You can view the full plan here.

New York  ranks at or near the bottom of the list nationwide in economic category after category:

  • Worst economic outlook;
  • High property taxes;
  • Highest overall taxes;
  • 48th in business-friendliness;
  • Most regulated state with more than 750,000 regulations;
  • Upstate NY has had worst economic recovery in the nation;
  • Unemployment rate higher than the nation's;
  • Most people leaving a state (400,000 under Governor Cuomo);
  • Worst state in which to retire.

Mr. Astorino cited the need to make New York competitive with surrounding states first, and then to begin competing with the nation's leading growth states states like Florida, Texas and the Carolinas.

"Everywhere I go, I ask New Yorkers a simple question: As a state, are we winning or losing?" said Mr. Astorino. "The evidence clearly points to us losing, and losing badly to other states. I refuse to accept that. Governor Cuomo failed to deliver on his promise to deliver the  real reforms that will turn New York around. I will bring them."

Mr. Astorino continued, "I know people are struggling, but I'm here to say there is hope. There is no question that with the right policies in Albany, we absolutely can take New York out of the economic doldrums and get people working again with good paying jobs. We can make New York great again and this plan will help us get there."

Mr. Astorino released a 10-point Ethics Reform Plan last month, and will be unveiling tax, education, and other proposals in the coming weeks.
