Friends,
I wanted to share with you an article and photos covering my recent trip to Israel in Israel National News (Arutz Sheva):

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/184120#.U_Db7qNuqNa

The full text is below. Be assured I have returned safely from the campaign trip to Israel.

Best,
Nick Di iorio
Candidate for Congress, NY-12

Arab Rock-Throwers Ambush Visiting NYC Congressional Nominee Di iorio

Near Hevron, Arab boys pelt car that was taking Nick Di Iorio, candidate for 12th congressional district, to Jerusalem.

By Gil Ronen. First published: 8/17/2014, 5:12pm

Nick Di Iorio, 28, Republican candidate for the 12th Congressional District in New York, experienced personally the precarious security situation in Israel on his visit to the Holy Land last week.

A car driving Di Iorio from a visit to Sderot toward Jerusalem came under attack by a group of Arab boys "who hurled rocks at us and laughed," Di Iorio recalled.

Also in the car with Di Iorio was New York based philanthropist Ken Abramowitz, Chairman of American Friends of Likud, who accompanied him on his visit to Israel. No one was hurt in the attack, which took place not far from Susya, near Hevron.

Di Iorio has been endorsed by the Republican, Conservative and Independent parties. This race is the first time, he claims, that a Republican running for Congress in New York has been endorsed by four parties.

Di Iorio is considered a long shot candidate in the race, which pits him against Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Astoria), who has been in office since 1992.

Following the 2010 census, the district was enlarged to include more Republican areas, and Di Iorio says that along with the endorsements from the other parties, this means that "we walk into election day with 90,000 party affiliated voters supporting us." There are about 400,000 registered voters in total in the district -- half of them Democrats, but a relatively low turnout November 4 could work in Di Iorio's favor.

Di Iorio told Arutz Sheva that he is focusing on three issues: corruption in Washington, job creation and defending Israel. As a moderate Democrat, he explained, Maloney is "in lockstep with the president who demanded that Israel agree to an immediate ceasfire" in Gaza. She "doesn't realize that America's survival depends on Israel -- which is the western world's eastern frontier -- as much as Israel depends on the US."

The candidiate revealed that in his visit to southern Israel, two IDF colonels told him that Israel "needs to wait until Obama is out of office before it can take any proactive action against Iran."

Hillary Clinton "may be to the right of Obama" on Israel, he added, "but she doesn't see the long game. She thinks our loyalty to Israel is based on past political history, when in fact it is about democracy, political freedom, a common culture -- and about protecting Cyprus and the Saudis from a Caliphate."

This is Di Iorio's first campaign as candidate. Originally from Rhode Island, he studied for six years to be a Catholic priest but left the seminary in 2010 and began working as a financial contractor with pharmaceutical firm Pfizer. The idea of running for office came to him last year, he says, when he became convinced that New York City is "becoming unsustainable."

Galef/Carlucci: Good News for Ossining Kids
$2.1 Million Awarded for Quality Pre-Kindergarten in Ossining

The New York State Education Department announced $340 million in funding for quality pre-kindergarten programs across the state.  The Ossining Union Free School District received $2,142,900, which is among the highest awards in the State.

The inclusion of the Ossining schools in this important funding program was championed by Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and Senator David Carlucci.

“This is great news for our schools,” said Assemblywoman Sandy Galef (D-Ossining). “As a former teacher I can say that it has become even more important to receive an early education. Prekindergarten programs have been shown to improve literacy skills and create a foundation for life-long educational success. Children are ready to learn at an early age, and we cannot afford to have them play catch-up later in life.”

Studies have shown that children who participate in quality early education programs are far more likely to read at grade level and graduate on time. Full-day programs have been proving to produce significant increases in student performance in math and reading by the second grade.

This program represents the largest expansion of Full-Day Pre-Kindergarten in New York State Education history.

Senator David Carlucci (D-Westchester/Rockland) said, “Funding quality pre-k throughout the Hudson Valley will make sure our children will have the high-quality preschool education they deserve. Study after study proves early education has a long lasting, positive influence on our children's future success."

Ossining School District Superintendent Ray Sanchez said, “I want to thank Assemblywoman Galef and Senator Carlucci for working together to make sure our kids here in Ossining received adequate funding to extend our high quality pre-kindergarten program. This enormous grant will give our children a head start and the opportunity to succeed throughout their educational careers at no additional cost to the local taxpayer, and no increase in the school budget.”

ASTORINO LAUNCHES JOBS PLAN TOUR IN BINGHAMTON

"There is no question: With the right policies in Albany we can make New York great again, and get good paying jobs back into this state."

Binghamton, NY--August 19...Westchester County Executive and reform Republican candidate for governor Rob Astorino today unveiled a significant policy proposal to make New York economically competitive again. The Astorino Job Plan was announced at Bob Carr 2.0 Printing and Mailing, a small business in Binghamton where County Executive Astorino was joined by its namesake owner.

You can view the full plan here.

New York  ranks at or near the bottom of the list nationwide in economic category after category:

  • Worst economic outlook;
  • High property taxes;
  • Highest overall taxes;
  • 48th in business-friendliness;
  • Most regulated state with more than 750,000 regulations;
  • The U.S. Conference of Mayors recently ranked 363 metropolitan areas nationwide for economic growth forecast.  Ten New York metropolitan areas ranked in the bottom 20. Binghamton and Utica were dead last;
  • Upstate NY has had worst economic recovery in the nation;
  • Unemployment rate higher than the nation's;
  • Most people leaving a state (400,000 under Governor Cuomo);
  • Worst state in which to retire.

Mr. Astorino cited the need to make New York competitive with surrounding states first, and then to begin competing with the nation's leading growth states states like Florida, Texas and the Carolinas.

"Everywhere I go, I ask New Yorkers a simple question: As a state, are we winning or losing?" said Mr. Astorino. "The evidence clearly points to us losing, and losing badly to other states. I refuse to accept that. Governor Cuomo failed to deliver on his promise to deliver the  real reforms that will turn New York around. I will bring them."

Mr. Astorino continued, "I know people are struggling, but I'm here to say there is hope. There is no question that with the right policies in Albany, we absolutely can take New York out of the economic doldrums and get people working again with good paying jobs. We can make New York great again and this plan will help us get there."

Mr. Astorino released a 10-point Ethics Reform Plan last month, and will be unveiling tax, education, and other proposals in the coming weeks.

Remington lays off 105 New Yorkers; Alabamans thankful for new jobs
So much for "open for business."

Yesterday, the Syracuse Post Standard reported that 105 New Yorkers at a Remington plant in Ilion will lose their jobs as Remington ships the plant to Alabama.

According to the report, Andrew Cuomo's SAFE Act played a role in Remington's decision.

This morning, Rob Astorino and Chris Moss unveiled their jobs plan. Check it out here.

Here's the piece on Remington:

105 to be laid off at Remington Arms in Ilion, N.Y.

Syracuse Post Standard

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- One hundred and five people will be laid off at Remington Arms in Ilion, Sen. James Seward's office confirmed this afternoon.

The layoffs are part of the gun maker's plans to move two assembly lines to Alabama, which was announced in May, Seward's office said.

In May, the president of United Mine Workers Local 717 said about 80 people would be laid off with no guarantees of jobs at the new plant. Fran Madore said at the time that the passage of the NY Safe Act played into the decision.

ASTORINO BRINGS JOBS PLAN TOUR TO BUFFALO

 "There is no question: With the right policies in Albany we can make New York great again, and get good paying jobs back into this state."

Buffalo, NY--August 19...Westchester County Executive and reform Republican candidate for governor Rob Astorino today unveiled in Buffalo a significant policy proposal to make New York economically competitive again.

Lalor Asks Cuomo Why New York is Hiding Illegal Immigrant Policy From the Public
Fishkill, NY - (8/19/14) - Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R,C,I - Fishkill) is asking Governor Cuomo to be honest with New Yorkers about the placement of illegal immigrant minors in New York State and take a public stand on illegal immigration. Lalor's letter to Cuomo can be found online here.

"
According to published reports and federal data, New York has received 3,347 illegal immigrant minors including some in Dutchess County, the county that I represent," said Lalor. "In Dutchess County, local officials were not informed of this placement and only learned of it from constituents. Why did your administration choose not to inform local officials about the placement of illegal immigrant minors in their communities?"

Lalor continued, "I’m disappointed that the placement of illegal immigrant minors in our state was kept secret from local officials. According to the Washington Post, at least thirty-two governors have made statements on the border crisis and how it relates to their state including governors in states that are not hosting illegal immigrant minors. Our state has received thousands of the illegal border crossers, but our chief executive has remained silent. New Yorkers shouldn't be kept in the dark."

"The illegal immigration issue is particularly important to New Yorkers because state lawmakers  are proposing legislation that would allow non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, the right to vote and receive Medicaid coverage," Lalor add. "Meanwhile, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City Council are moving ahead with a controversial plan to give official city identification cards to illegal immigrants. Finally, New York City’s federal immigration judges are the most lenient in the country, granting asylum to 80 percent of those who seek it. These factors make our state a magnet for illegal immigrants. We need to know where you stand on these policies, Governor Cuomo."

Specifically Lalor asked Cuomo:

1.       Why did your administration choose not to inform local officials about the placement of illegal immigrant minors in their communities?

2.       Will you prevent New York State tax dollars from being spent to support illegal immigrants?

3.       Do you support or oppose State Senator Rivera’s proposal to allow illegal immigrants to vote, and qualify for Medicaid coverage?

4.       Do you support or oppose Mayor de Blasio’s plan to give official city identification cards to illegal immigrants?

Lalor concluded, "Thirty-two governors have made statements on the border crisis and how it affects their states. New York needs to hear from Governor Cuomo and his administration."

Lalor's letter to Governor Cuomo is available online here

If Governor Cuomo Is Unable or Unwilling, I Will Debate Zephyr Teachout
Democracy Alert: Gov. Cuomo Denies Prof. Teachout
 Primary Debate; Astorino Offers to Step In
Script:

"If Governor Cuomo won't debate his Democratic primary opponent Zephyr Teachout - either because he's afraid to or he is unable to while under federal investigation for corruption, or both - I will debate Professor Teachout.

"New York is suffering under the highest taxes in the nation, the worst economic outlook and has the most corrupt state government.

"These are very serious issues that need to be discussed and debated. Voters need to hear proposed solutions.

"If Governor Cuomo's solution is to continue to hide and cower, I will debate Professor Teachout.

"New Yorkers deserve a debate and there is an increasing likelihood that Professor Teachout may very well be my general election opponent, so this will give us a head start to a robust debate schedule much like my Democrat opponent and I had last year when we agreed to five informative debates.

"This is what voters deserve and this is what one does when they respect democracy."

WASHINGTON – Today, the National Republican Congressional Committee unveiled, Drain the Swamp, a website dedicated to shining a bright light on the abuses of power and rampant crony capitalism in Nancy Pelosi’s Democrat party. Pelosi once pledged to “drain the swamp,” but now desperate to regain power, she’s hitched her wagon to corrupt candidates who are drowning in the muck.

“Pelosi’s swamp is overflowing with unethical candidates,” said Andrea Bozek, NRCC Communications Director. “Nancy Pelosi and Democrats are so desperate to regain complete liberal control of Washington, they are backing candidates who have more dirty laundry than the Real Housewives.”
