Bazzo Says: A Pox On The Yorktown Town Board

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS & MAHOPAC NEWS

A pox on the Yorktown Town Board

One of the first acts the members of the Town Board did two years ago was to give themselves a raise. It was undeserved, especially in the economic circumstances at the time. However, they did it publicly and even though the public felt that a raise at that time was ill advised, they went ahead and did it anyway.

Fast forward to last week, under cover of darkness (meaning no public notice) prior to the scheduled public session of the Town Board meeting, the councilman not only gave themselves another raise, but they tied it to the CSEA contract. This means that board members will get raises in perpetuity, and never again have to appear before the public to discuss it.

A few years back, when discussing raises, a different Town Board tried to enact a permanent cost of living increase so it would not have to go before the public again. The blowback was so loud that even though they voted for the raises, they dropped the cost of living increase. On this issue, the public has made its desires known loud and clear. The board knew this and so to circumvent the will of the people last week, it tried to be cute by half.

Now remember, it is the Town Board that negotiates the CSEA contracts. So, being that each member’s future salary will be tied to these contracts, there will be nobody looking out for the taxpayers (who will be footing the bill) next time the Town Board negotiates with the CSEA. No matter how the supervisor tries to spin this, the reality is that the term "collective bargaining" will no longer exist in its defined form as there will not be anyone at the table representing Yorktown taxpayers—me and you!

In fact, to muddy the waters even more, what the board did was to vote on two resolutions, both of which were not formally written up until after the votes. One, where the raises were time-centric (it had an expiration date) and the other open-ended (no expiration date). This was done so certain members of the board could vote against one, but vote for the other. This way they can go back to the residents and say they did not vote for the raise. In the future, you can call this Town Board the, "John Kerry Board," as they voted against it before they voted for it. The circumstances surrounding this vote can only lead one to the conclusion that the Town Board is not honorable in putting our needs before theirs. Sneaky and underhanded does not begin to describe their actions.

Already, both Councilmen Vishnu Patel and Terrence Murphy are playing dumb as to their votes. The reality is that they have tried to use this self-serving action against the will and interests of the taxpayer, hereby negating any good this board has done or will do in the future. This is the argument Democrats are using to excuse their corruption or their enabling of the culture of corruption in Albany. They and their supporters are saying, "Look at all the good I have done. Ignore the person behind the curtain and vote for me anyway."
Character matters and we have enough characters in Albany. We do not have to send another one there.

Grace, Bianco, Murphy and Patel cannot be trusted. You want to know how they knew they were doing wrong last week? They hid from the public. There is not one member of this board that deserves your vote in any present or future election, even if that means electing a Democrat. I do not care. Did members of this board think I would eat this because of the fear of helping Democrats? They are wrong! I did not do this, so whatever consequences rests squarely on their shoulders.
It is funny in a way. This board cannot come together to fill the seat that has been vacant since Jan. 1. This board cannot come together on the Spectra Energy pipeline and the proposed ball fields. Yet, when it came to screwing the taxpayer in perpetuity, the members of the Town Board came together. They actually think their childish actions deserve a raise.

Another thing discussed last week was an attempt to ban plastic bags from local grocery stores. It died the death it deserved, which is good because, you see, we will need these bags to puke in every time the CSEA contract comes up for negotiations.

A pox on the Town Board members and the horse they rode in on!
This is what I say. What say you?
