Hudson Valley Honor Flight Comes to Westchester

Walden, New York – Hudson Valley Honor Flight, the regional hub of the Honor Flight Network, has

decided to bring the Honor Flight experience to Westchester County Airport. The nonprofit organization

has flown out of Stewart International Airport for the past two years taking nearly 400 WWII veterans

from the surrounding counties to see their memorial and other sites in Washington D.C.

According to the VA, nearly half of the 8,000 WWII aged veterans in the Hudson Valley Honor Flight

immediate service area are from Westchester County. The organizers of HVHF felt it would benefit their

veterans from the lower portion of the Hudson Valley to take off closer to home.

“The staff at Westchester County Airport is proud to play a role in support of the Hudson Valley Honor

Flight this fall,” said Stephen Ferguson, Assistant Airport Manager at Westchester County Airport.

In addition to the airport, Hudson Valley Honor Flight has garnished support to make the expansion

possible from the real estate firm Newmark Grubb Knight Frank and their Chairman Jeffrey Gural. Also

graciously showing their willingness to help the mission is the Westchester County Veterans Service

Agency, Landmark Aviation, and Westchester Community College, which will serve as both the Rally

Point and site of the Welcome Home Reception on Flight Day.

It is vital to have this strong support from Westchester based organizations. ShopRite, a community

oriented company and ally of veteran causes, has helped HVHF complete four successful missions out of

Stewart to date. Without community involvement, the overall mission, giving veterans the recognition

and honor they deserve, would not reach it’s full potential.

“It’s amazing how an idea has flourished in our community and this expansion is made possible because

of the continual outpouring of support we receive,” said Steve Nicoli, Founder of Hudson Valley Honor

Flight.

The first flight out of Westchester will take off on October 18, 2014. This flight will follow the already

scheduled fall flight out of Stewart International Airport on September 27th. The group now plans to

organize four flights per year, two from each airport. While the organization is actively searching and

successfully finding WWII veterans to go on their flights, they keep applications from veterans of Korea

and Vietnam on file for future trips.

For more information, visit www.hvhonorflight.com or call 845-391-0076.

###

Hudson Valley Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to transport American veterans to Washington, D.C. to view their

memorials. The local hub is a member of the national Honor Flight Network and has transported nearly 400 veterans since their inception in

2012. Funds are raised locally by each individual chapter, allowing veterans to go on the trip at no cost. HVHF transports veterans from Orange,

Ulster, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan, Pike, and other surrounding counties. It is a one day trip involving a unique itinerary

designed to give the veterans the complete Honor Flight experience that they so rightly deserve - to show how grateful we are for their sacrifices

and what their service meant to this country and also what it means to our local community. Still, thousands from our local area have yet to

benefit from the experience and time is unfortunately not on their side. World War II Veterans are dying at the rate of approximately 550 per day.

HVHF would like to thank their 2014 Flight Sponsor, ShopRite, for their continued support and commitment to our organization and local

veterans.

NEW BUILDING PERMIT AT 1920 MAPLE COURT

Mike/ Terrance
What can I say another week of no responses from either of you.

Also I noticed that the corruptions continues,  the ZBA is going through the "process " again of approving the violations at 1920 Maple Court.  I watched the first hearing which occurred last Thursday.  The false and inaccurate statements went unchallenged by the board and the Building Inspector.  I was wondering did the ZBA write their approval already or are they going to wait for a few days to try to make it look real?

Thank you for being the first one from the Supervisors office to acknowledge my concerns expressed in the  emails covering the last 14 months.  I have noticed that Michael has time to write editorials in the papers defending himself and his positions but he does not have time to properly manage this town or answer his constituents.

Your response was actually a non response. None of the concerns or questions in my email chain were even remotely addressed.

1- What does demolition of one structure have to do with the timing for  the demolition of the second structure?
2-If both structures are illegal why aren't both coming down at the same time?
3- When will these structures come down and has the Town set any timetables ?

The town has finally acknowledge both structures are illegal (after being told that the District Attorney is involved), but the town has been actually working with the property owner behind the scenes on ways to keep these structures up for as long as possible.

Both structures were illegally built over 24 and 14 months ago and both are still up causing an eyesore for our property and for our neighborhood and also causing a major depreciation to our property value.

To my knowledge only Councilmen Bianco and Patel have inquired about this situation and have asked for an investigation. Unfortunately none was actually started by the town.  Grace and Murphy appear perfectly content with keeping their mismanagement and their "dirt swept under the rug " hoping I will forget about this entire issue. Is it the fear  of  possible corruption and/ or just plain incompetence that keeps them from demanding an investigation? Is it really possible that they both think they are "Teflon " and immune to a real thorough investigation with possible criminal implications?

Since you are Michael's assistant and he does not answer his email, would you mind conveying the following questions to him and let him know that I am still demanding answers:

1- Who in the Town government or employed by the town authorized the waiver of 15 years worth of  sewer bills and  back taxes for 1920 Maple Court?  Why is there not even one piece of paper in the Town possession concerning this mistake or for the waiving of back taxes for the property?

2- Why have the last three building permits issued for 1920 Maple Court used altered ( inaccurate ) survey maps when the Town's Building Department has been in possession  of accurate maps since 2008.

3- Why has the Assessor's office never updated their records and maps based on the permits and certificates of occupancy issued by the Building Department for 1920 Maple Court?  Who is responsible for administering that office efficiently?

4-How, were the Building Inspectors, the Code Enforcement Officers and the entire Zoning Board able to conduct multiple site visits at 1920 Maple Court and none ever noticed  zoning code violations or the fact that the maps that were submitted with the building permit applications and used by them were not accurate for the property they were allegedly inspecting?

5- Why is it that Supervisor Grace and Councilman Murphy have not demanded an independent investigation into these possible corrupt acts?

6- Why was it that only after I notified the Supervisor that the Ethic's Board, the Weschester DA and the NYS Attorney General's office have been notified and are reviewing the entire matter, that I only get his assistant to respond  with a two line response and the Code Enforcement Officer actually started using violation notices?

Thank you

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 1, 2014

Democratic Legislator Parker Pushes for County “Energy Director”

White Plains, NY – In an effort to capitalize on new environmental initiatives that can provide long-term savings for county taxpayers, Westchester County Legislator Catherine Parker (D-Rye) has introduced a new bill that calls for the creation of an “Energy Director” position for the County at the Administrative level.

The new legislation will soon be discussed in the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) Environment & Energy Committee, which Parker chairs, and the Budget & Appropriation and Legislation Committees as well. All of the Democratic caucus members of the BOL have signed on as co-sponsors of the bill.

The purpose behind the “Energy Director” legislation, said Parker, is to have a commissioner-level individual be in charge of working with other County departments to incorporate technologies to reduce the County’s greenhouse gas emissions, and find grant and funding opportunities for energy efficiency upgrades for infrastructure county-wide.

“Right now, we’re accomplishing piecemeal progress across the county in terms of achieving real energy efficiencies instead of developing a strategy to become a leader in this regard,” said Parker. “To stay ahead of the environmental curve, and create new initiatives that will boost economic development in the county, we need someone in place with the mission to focus simply on energy-related issues for the County.”

Westchester BOL Chairman Michael Kaplowitz (D-Somers) has long advocated for a Administrative position such as this.

“We are now reaching the point where many innovative energy-saving technologies are advancing from the development stage to real applications in the marketplace,” said Kaplowitz. “We have had some success in improving energy efficiency in many county functions, but to truly benefit from these newer energy technologies, we need an expert who can coordinate these initiatives into an energy strategy for the entire County Government operations.”

Parker is hoping the new legislation in discussion at the BOL will promote collaboration with the Administration in establishing the qualifications and responsibilities for the new “Energy Director” position.

The BOL has the authority to create, modify or remove departments and offices and add or remove titles by act. New County titles must be established in the New York system by the County Human Resources Commissioner.

“Westchester’s residents and business owners will be well served by having a full-time director on board advocating for energy sustainability practices across the county,” said Legislator Pete Harckham (D-North Salem), chair of the BOL Labor, Parks, Planning & Housing Committee. “In the years ahead important decisions need to be made to ensure we are identifying best practices and efficient programs, all of which will save our taxpayers in the long run. This is a great idea whose time has surely come.”

The Cuckolded Mr. Cuomo
In case you missed it, the Wall Street Journal had a great piece in their Political Diary yesterday about Bill de Blasio outmaneuvering Andrew Cuomo to take control of the State Senate, and just what's at stake in November.

Remember, when Democrats controlled the Senate from 2009-2010, they raised taxes $14 billion in just two years.

The full piece is available at WSJ.com, but here's our favorite selection:

"The New Cuomo"
By Allysia Finley
The Wall Street Journal
June 30, 2014

...

Last week, the Independent Democratic Conference caved. So as of next year, Mr. de Blasio, er, Cuomo will be working with an entirely Democratic legislature. There is "no doubt there are progressive goals that we have yet to achieve and that we must accomplish next January," the governor declared on the heels of this putative victory. But it's Mr. de Blasio who's the real victor.

The cuckolded Mr. Cuomo has now agreed to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 (last year's legislation will raise it to $9 in 2016) and allow municipalities to tack on an additional 30%. That means New York City could soon have a $13.13 "living wage." If the governor wins re-election, there's no telling what liberal hobbyhorses he will support to curry favor with party progressives in anticipation of a future White House bid.

We suspect he will give into Mr. de Blasio's demand for home rule over taxes, and he may even renegotiate his position on charter co-locations. Just recently, he agreed to give ineffective teachers an additional two-year "safety net" before they're sanctioned, and school reformers fear he will water down performance evaluations again after the election. Expect Albany to become a fiefdom of Mayor de Blasio and his labor friends.
