Secretary
Croton Democrats

The Croton Democratic Committee is pleased to announce its endorsement of Ann Gallelli, Maria Slippen and Brian Pugh as Democratic candidates for Village Trustee this November.  The Committee voted on its endorsements after interviews with and presentations by all interested candidates at its most recent meeting in May. As well, the committee once again endorsed Sam Watkins for the office of Village Justice.

“I believe we have selected the right team,” said Democratic Committee Chair Paul Rolnick. “Ann Gallelli’s years of experience, combined with Maria Slippen’s track record of  community outreach and Brian Pugh’s interest in service and fresh ideas make for an unbeatable combination of strengths to meet voters’ expectations of our village government. And Sam Watkins has proven himself to be an exceptional jurist who will continue his impressive record of service on the Village Court.” He went on, “Confirming this slate will allow us to focus on getting out in the community, meeting with constituents through the summer and fall, and ensuring strong voter turnout this November.”

Trustee Gallelli said after her selection, “I believe we have a strong slate of candidates. I look forward to meeting with voters, sharing our ideas and listening to those of our residents. I know this team will continue to build on our past accomplishments.” Gallelli hopes get-togethers with residents in the coming months, hosted by the Democratic Committee and other groups, will get the conversation off to a great start.

Trustee Slippen said she looked forward to the opportunity to continue serving the village and promoting an open dialogue through which residents can discuss their concerns. “I really enjoy these conversations, and I want people to know that the Board is working diligently on their behalf.,” Slippen said. Slippen’s Trustee is running for the one year position and, if elected, she will face voters again next year. “Serving on the Board has given me the opportunity to make a positive impact on my community in a unique and meaningful way and I look forward to continuing this work after the November election.”

Brian Pugh is also excited to be part of the 2014 team. “It will be great to have a role at a time when so much is happening in my hometown,” he said. “We also have great opportunities to make our village more environmentally sustainable, and look at ways to streamline and modernize how services are delivered.”

Rolnick, a longtime Croton resident, called this election a historic opportunity for the Village, especially in combination with supporting the entire Democratic slate, from Governor Cuomo to Representative Nita Lowey to Croton’s own Justin Wagner, Democratic candidate for New York State Senate.  “Along with Sandy Galef, Justin would be the voice we need in Albany for workers and their families. And in Croton, with our strong slate along with Trustee Andy Levitt and Mayor Wiegman, we have five individuals with the experience, knowledge and passion to make Croton everything we know it can be – a vibrant community, a great place to live and raise a family, and an inviting destination for visitors. We look forward to a great campaign and victory in November.”

Script:

Saturday night was the night bipartisanship died in Albany.

A group of brave Democrats had a knife put in their backs by their own governor for having the audacity to reach across the political aisle.  That's really unfortunate.

New Yorkers want bipartisanship in government, not single-party rule and sneaky backroom deals like we saw with Andrew Cuomo and the Working Families Party, a fringe group started by former ACORN leaders.

We want something else, too -- a healthy balance in government between what we want and what we can afford.  We already have the highest taxes in America, we simply can't stay here if taxes keep rising and jobs keep leaving.

New Yorkers today spend 40% more in taxes on average than other Americans, and the Working Families Party deal will drive those taxes higher still.

So today, I am sending out an SOS -- a Save our State -- to New Yorkers of good will, of all political parties, to join me in the fight to bring healthy balanced government and bipartisanship to Albany.

The call is urgent: New York doesn't only have the highest taxes in America; it is now ranked as having the worst economic outlook in America. We're already bleeding people and jobs to other states under Andrew Cuomo, and now this...

As governor, I will work to bring a healthy balance to New York government -- a balance between what we want and what we can afford to spend. And I'll work across the aisle with Democrats and independents to get this state back in the winning column.

How do you become the most corrupt and highest taxed state in America?  Back room deals like Andrew Cuomo cut for himself on Saturday.  New Yorkers shouldn't stand for that.

***Media Advisory for WEDNESDAY—June 4***

***Westchester Legislator Parker Pushes for Cleaner Heating Oil Used in County***

White Plains, NY – Westchester Legislator Catherine Parker (D-Rye) will announce new legislation she has introduced at the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) to provide cleaner air in the county by banning the heavy, dirty heating oils #4 and #6 at a press conference on WEDNESDAY—June 4 at 11 AM.

The press conference will take place at Thornycroft, a 99-unit residential cooperative building in Scarsdale, managed by Garthchester Realty. John Bonito, co-president of Garthchester Realty, and Artie Guttilla, building superintendent of Thornycroft, together coordinated the successful conversion of Thornycroft from heavy oil to natural gas.  The result of this conversion was a substantial savings in cost (approximately 45%) and a cleaner burning fuel (no maintenance or environmental issues to be concerned with).

The American Lung Association has said that pollutants from dirty heating oil have a direct correlation with high number of asthma attacks, lung and heart disease. The growing soot pollution increases emergency room visits for these illnesses.

Joining Legislator Parker at the press conference will be Legislator Ben Boykin (D-White Plains), a co-sponsor of the bill, John Bonito and Artie Guttilla, plus oil company representatives, community leaders and environmental advocates.

WHO: Westchester Legislators Catherine Parker and Ben Boykin; John Bonito, co-president of Garthchester Realty, and Artie Guttilla, building superintendent of Thornycroft; David Singer and Kevin Dorsey from Robison Oil; Tom Bregman from EnergizeNY; representatives from Sustainable Westchester; elected and community leaders

WHAT: Press conference to announce Westchester County 2014 Clean Air Act, which will ban the use of heavy, dirty heating oils #4 and #6

WHEN: WEDNESDAY—June 4 at 11 AM

WHERE: Thornycroft

                209 Garth Road

SENATOR GREG BALL HONORS WWII VETERANS IN ALBANY ON 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY

Albany, N.Y. – 06/02/2014 – Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I –Patterson), Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, honored WWII veterans on the 70th anniversary of D-Day on the New York State Senate Floor this afternoon.

Senator Ball invited all WWII veterans that live in New York State to join the New York State Senate at the New York State Capitol in Albany, NY on Monday, June 2, 2014 to recognize their sacrifice for our country.

“As members of ‘The Greatest Generation’, these soldiers fought bravely and selflessly in the most devastating war in the history of the world, and triumphed over tyranny with their fellow brothers and sisters. It was my distinct honor to recognize their service to this great country on the floor of the New York State Senate,” said Senator Greg Ball.

The New York State Senate commemorated the anniversary with a New York State Senate resolution:

On June 6, 1944, the military might of the Allies combined for the most extensive aerial and sea borne assault ever planned; the D-Day Invasion at the beaches of Normandy, France changed the direction of World War II, and the history of the twentieth century; planned for over two years by the Allied Forces, the D-Day Invasion was an intricate coordination of the world's greatest military forces, and an exercise in cooperation that marked the turning point of the war, and the world's history.

The Allied Invasion of Europe, code-named Operation Overlord, consisted of five infantry divisions, two American, two British, and one Canadian, assigned to beaches code-named, from west to east, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword; on the first day of the invasion, two American airborne divisions landed behind the western end of the assault area and one British at the eastern, while amphibious armor was to swim ashore with the leading waves.

The invasion was supported by more than 13,000 fighter, bomber, and transport aircraft, that, between April 1st and June 5, 1944, flew 200,000 sorties and succeeded in breaking all the bridges across the Seine and Loire rivers to isolate the Normandy Invasion area from the rest of France.

Five World War II veterans from Senator Ball’s district joined the New York State Senate during session on Monday afternoon. Herman Schreiber, Army – Corporal, Senator Ball’s grandfather who was celebrating his 88th birthday; Peter "Barney" Bambace, Air Force – Private 1st class; John Graziano, Navy – 3rd Class Petty Officer; Peter Senatore, Army – Lieutenant and Jack Alonzo, Navy –  1st Class Seaman with his wife, Virginia Alonzo.

In addition to be recognized on the New York State Senate Floor, there was also an exhibit set up in the Legislative Office Building lobby commemorating the day.
