Bazzo Says:My Primary Concern

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS & MAHOPAC NEWS
TITLE: My Primary Concern

As reported in last week’s paper, first term Carmel Councilman Jonathan Schneider has decided to primary incumbent Assemblyman Steve Katz on the Republican and Conservative lines for District 94. In full disclosure, I am a friend and supporter of the incumbent. Steve has proven that as far as true Republican and Conservative principles are concerned, he not only talks the talk but walks the walk. He, unlike most politicians, has admitted when he was wrong on an issue and changed his mind and vote when the facts on the ground changed. This trait, so rare in today’s political class, is to be commended, not condemned.
Polls show that the two most important issues on people’s minds this election cycle are the economy (taxes and hydraulic fracturing) and the culture of corruption in Albany—not gun control, not contraceptives or abortion. Not even medical marijuana. On these issues, Assemblyman Katz has not only been outspoken, but his positions are clear and concise. They are certainly at odds with this governor. He has taken stands that are unambiguous. He has done his homework and knows of what he speaks.

Here is where the candidates differ. In fact the choice could not be clearer. Assemblyman Katz holds the true Republican and Conservative positions while according to the story in last week’s paper, Councilman Schneider’s positions are more in line with that of the Democrat nominee Andrew Falk and Gov. Cuomo’s.  In fact, I submit that Councilman Schneider would be more at home in a primary against Mr. Falk.
  Let me explain.

According to the story:Schneider also would not comment on Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who Katz and others have, among other things, accused of covering up sexual harassment on several occasions. Katz has been calling for Silver’s resignation since his first term in Albany.“I haven’t spent one day on the Assembly floor so for me to come out and right off the bat say, ‘This person in charge should be gone,’ I personally think that would be improper for me to say that,” Schneider said.

The issue of corruption in Albany is not new and the fact that Assembly Speaker Silver is being sued for covering up such corruption has been in the news for a number of years. For Schneider not to have an opinion on this is stunning. His position is perfectly in line with that of the Democrats. The difference is that as Assembly speaker, Silver wields a lot of clout among fellow Democrats, including the governor. Democrats who anger Silver do so at their political peril, so they have to keep quiet and cannot afford to call for his resignation. Yet for the Republicans in the Silver-controlled Assembly, life is much simpler. They get nothing, so they can afford to call Silver to account.

I am not inferring in any manner that Councilman Schneider condones corruption in any form. However, to be silent on Speaker Silver’s well-publicized enabling of corruption (that is putting it mildly) is to allow it to continue. Is Councilman Schneider siding with the ruling class? On this he must better explain himself.
Also according to the story:In regards to fracking, Schneider said he sees the benefits but would need to do more research.

This is the exact same position as the governor’s. This issue has been studied by both the state and federal government for six years. The federal EPA gave it its blessings. The question begs to be asked, if you are running for state office, why haven’t you done any research? How many more people in the Southern Tier must suffer economically before you start your research?

If one is to base their choice on last week’s article, it would be a choice between a Republican/Conservative (Katz) or a RINO (Schneider). Though it still not too late to primary Falk.
This is what I say. What say you?
