Bazzo Says: Building Block-Heads

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS & MAHOPAC NEWS
TITLE:   Building Block-Heads

• Sandra Lee, who shares a home in New Castle with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, made headlines recently concerning renovations to her home, which she has owned since 2009. It was reported that she did work inside and outside the home, including adding an $11,000 gazebo for which she apparently did not get permits until after she got violation notices. It seems, according to stories in the Daily News and New York Post that Gov. Cuomo’s top aide, Larry Schwartz, interceded with the Town on the Cuomo’s behalf before things got out of hand. As usual, in an effort to cover up for Democrats instead of covering them, nobody in the media asked the question, why did the governor’s top aide intervene in a matter involving Sandra Lee? This was a private matter, not a public one, so why are we paying for a public official to do private work on our time? Also, according to the Town assessor, it seems the addition of the $11,000 gazebo did not affect Lee’s property assessment.

• Speaking of buildings, I remember a few years ago all the hoopla surrounding an historic building on the property of the Yorktown High School. The debate hinged on whether to raze it or fix it up. Either way, the taxpayer was going to be on the hook for the costs. The cost for renovation was close to $1 million. The cost of tearing it down was not even close. Yet, there were loud voices in favor of spending the money to renovate. Save our building! Save our history, damn the expense! As a history buff, was in favor of saving the farmhouse. Yet, I understood why it had to come down.

Now we have another battle raging with the former sales office at the Trump Park Residences. According to documents, it was as a temporary structure that would be taken down at some point. This is because it is deemed to be on “protected land.”  This building has an approximate value of close to $2 million. It is certainly in better shape than the “historic” farmhouse that was on school property.

The Westchester Land Trust and residents of Trump Park Residences maintain the building must come down and the property be used for passive recreation for the residents. They threatened to sue Cappelli, the developer, if it did not raze it. It has been reported Cappelli will oblige to avoid a lawsuit.

Unlike the farmhouse, this building could be put to good use as a Town-maintained center for the arts and for both youth-oriented and senior citizen activities. In fact, Supervisor Michael Grace has spoken with Cappelli, who agreed (if allowed), to make the necessary modifications to the building at no charge to the Town, unlike what happened with the farmhouse.

Grace sent a letter to Westchester Land Trust stating the case for the building’s value to the Town and its residents, but as of this writing, the Westchester Land Trust has not responded to him. I have no use for the Westchester Land Trust as it is full of mostly non-Yorktowners. I am not a fan of people from other municipalities coming here and telling us what we can and cannot do in our town. After all, who died and left them boss? In fact, who in Yorktown elected them to oversee our home rule? As for “protected land,” the only thing we need protection from is the Westchester Land Trust.

However, the residents of Trump Park do have a leg to stand on. It is within their rights to demand this building come down. However, having the right to do something does not make it the right thing to do. This building is far enough away from the main residence as not to interfere with the residents’ comings and goings. It would behoove the residents to think more about the greater good of Yorktown and less about their myopic self-interests. This building is worth saving. If saving a building that would have cost taxpayers bundles of money was worth fighting for, then surely a building that can be refit for Town use at no cost to the Town is certainly worth keeping. Supervisor Grace is right on this issue.

This is what I say. What say you?
