Bazzo Says: I was Just Saying

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS
TITLE:  I was Just Saying

McKean got it right

No one is wrong 100 percent of the rime. If from time to time I differ with Mr. McKean, I would be remiss if I did not point out when I agree with him. His column last week, “Losing it,” is case in point. He says, sadly, something that had to be said.

I would like to point out a couple of things. My business requires me to interact with multiple governing entities. One is Peekskill. Their elected representatives make less money with no benefits. The mayor is paid $13,000 a year and council members make $8,000. Yes, the mayor is considered part-time, however I would wager he puts in as much time as neighboring supervisors. Like ours, their council is part time.

They too, have to take gruff from angry residents. It comes with the territory. Remember, our representatives willingly sought the office, so they really have no kick when people let their emotions get the best of them. This is an explanation, not an excuse.

Though now there is only one police officer at the Peekskill meetings, usually the chief, for a while they needed four officers to keep order. Having a police presence is a good thing, not something to criticize.

Seeing firsthand what both governing bodies have to deal with, I submit the following. Peekskill has to deal with more divergent interests. Their representatives are under-compensated. Ours are over-compensated.

Filling a void

Since last November, there has been a vacancy on the Yorktown Town Board. It is not the first time the Town has dealt with an open seat, and the fact that it has not been filled by now is outrageous. This idea that the people must wait until November is bull. When Supervisor Cooper left before her term expired, nobody had a problem with an interim-supervisor before the election—including Councilman Nick Bianco.

Players on both sides are looking for a guaranteed third vote. They are looking for what’s best for their agenda, not what’s best for town. Right now, what is best for the town is someone who is trained to look at the law and the merits of the argument, and not any one ideology. That person is Judge Ilan Gilbert, a former Yorktown judge who was, by the way, appointed.

With him on the Town Board, both Mr. Bianco and Supervisor Michael Grace would have to make the more persuasive argument to get the third vote. Then, the parties could sort out the rest in a November election and then the people can have their say.

We have our own “Nanny Mike”

Forget about Mike Bloomberg, we have Mike Kaplowitz! From a County Board of Legislators press release, it seems our legislators have too much time on their hands. Going after easy prey, again with the idea they know what’s best for everyone else, Westchester County Board of Legislators Majority Leader Catherine Borgia (D-Ossining) proposed legislation to raise the minimum age required for the purchase of cigarettes and tobacco-related products in Westchester County to 19, with the blessings of Board Chairman Kaplowitz.

It seems they think 18 year olds are too stupid to make their own decisions about a legal product.  It should be noted that neither Borgia nor Kaplowitz smoke. I do.

Let us extrapolate on their premise.

If 18 year olds are too stupid to decide for themselves whether to smoke or not, then they are also too stupid to fight our wars and vote. Considering that most youths vote Democrat, there might be merit to that argument.

The reality is that most youths chose to smoke—cigarettes and otherwise—not by what they see on the screen or what is advertised, but what they see at home.

So, Ms. Borgia and Mr. Kaplowitz, I have a better idea. Why don’t you propose legislation that would lock up parents who smoke in front of their children? Or better yet, outlaw reproduction for those who smoke.

Government seizing tax refunds

From the Washington Post:
“A few weeks ago, with no notice, the US government intercepted Mary Grice’s tax refunds from both the IRS and the state of Maryland. Grice had no idea that Uncle Sam had seized her money until some days later, when she got a letter saying that her refund had gone to satisfy an old debt to the government.”
The debt belonged to her mother, Sadie Grice.

Again from the story:
“When Grice was 4, back in 1960, her father died, leaving her mother with five children to raise. Until the kids turned 18, Sadie Grice got survivor benefits from Social Security to help feed and clothe them. Now, Social Security claims it overpaid someone in the Grice family in 1977. After 37 years of silence, four years after Sadie Grice died, the government is coming after her daughter.”

One of the principals at our founding was the unique idea that, “the sins of the father could not be visited upon the son.” You see before this, it was common place that if the father died in debt to the government and his children were successful on their own, the government could seize the assets of the children to satisfy that debt. Our Founding Fathers, especially Thomas Jefferson who was a victim of this practice, made sure this new nation would not be allowed to do this.

BREAKING: As of Monday, April 14, the Social Security Administration has announced it will cease this practice, while congress reworks the law.

This is another example of a runaway IRS. The IRS cannot do what it is doing, but yet it is. However, the BIG story last week was about a Louisiana congressman who was caught kissing someone other than his wife at a Christmas Party. Oh, by the way, this congressman is a Republican, in case you did not know.

Making this personal

For my Democrat friends who couldn’t imagine voting for a Republican, check this out:

Gov. Cuomo said that people who are not liberal have no place in New York State. Do you agree with this type of bigotry/segregation?

Do you agree with the pundits who say that those who do not buy into “man-made climate change” should be put in jail? Surely, you do not support Soviet-style thought control, do you?

Day after day we have liberals, elected and not elected, say that those who disagree with the policies of President Obama do so solely because of his skin color. Do you agree with this?

Some say these are abstract points, but they are not. You see, this Democrat Party you are so proud of and these pundits whose every word you hang on, well, they are talking about me.

Do you think I should have to leave the state? Should I be put in jail and re-taught how to think? Am I a racist?

I could never vote or support a party that is so closed minded and full of rage. Why do you, because they trot out emotion-based slogans with rainbow flags and a fake “paycheck equality bill” every now and then? It is a con job.

Yet, you could, can and will vote for those who would say or think these things about me.
Their demagoguery is not an abstract. It is not directed at some un-named person, persons or groups. They do not qualify their demagoguery. If they could do this to me, they can do to you. History has taught us that. Hatred is always hungry and always needs feeding. As no one in your party has voiced disagreement with any of the above, you must conclude they are in agreement.

Think about this.

This is what I say. What say you?
