Bazzo Says: Validation & Projection

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS
TITLE:  Validation & Projection

Validation

Recently, Gov. Cuomo stated the obvious. He said that New York has a big problem concerning the smuggling if illegal smokes. I say obvious because I have written countless time that cigarette smuggling is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. Cuomo’s answer, of course, is more government. He announced the creation of a new strike force to crack down on smuggling. This “answer” will cost more than they can recover in taxes and fines. Even with his new proposed increases in fines and jail time, to the smuggler the reward is still greater than the risk. Cuomo’s plan will not work. Think prohibition.

The final answer was its repeal. When people have no respect for a law, they will find a way around it.

The real answer to this issue is lowering taxes, as I have repeatedly stated. Right now, New York has the highest cigarette taxes in the nation at $4.35 a pack. Add $1.50 more if you live in New York City. Missouri taxes cigarettes at 17 cents a pack. The Carolinas, Virginias and Florida also have very low cigarette taxes. So, when smugglers buy from those states and sell them at New York prices you can see the windfall and the predictable consequence of punitive taxation of a legal product. For the longest time I was a lone voice in the wilderness.

Now, according to the April 6 New York Post, the Tax Foundation released a report based on the analysis by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. The report found that smugglers are attracted to the high profits generated by New York’s highest taxes. The report’s conclusion, like mine, is to lower the taxes as to negate the reward of smuggling. The problem with liberals is that they wish to be judged by their intents, not the consequences of their policies. Their zealotry against smoking enables this criminal activity. If this were the private sector, the people who passed the last round of taxes that made smuggling so lucrative would also be arrested as co-conspirators.

Again being a lone voice in the wilderness, I have written that Governor Cuomo’s re-election is not the fait-accompli the stenographers in the media would like you to think it is. I have cited polls showing his approval ratings in the 40s. The numbers reflect his continued impotence in dealing with New York’s economic stagnation and the culture of corruption that plagues Albany.
When Cuomo took office New York was ranked the 48th least business-friendly state in the nation. Under his watch we are now dead last, at number 50. (Yes, Mr, President, there are 50 states in this country, not 57…). This has not gone unnoticed by voters outside of the big cities—which are overrun with the liberal 1-percenters at the top and the gimmie-brigades at the bottom.

His politicizing of hydraulic-fracturing has put the lie to his promise to judge this process strictly on science. As a result, he is a pariah in the Southern Tier of New York. He admitted disbanding his vaunted Morland Commission for purely political purposes after he got what he wanted in the new budget.
Thankfully, US District Attorney Preet Bharara requested and received all documents from the Morland Commission and he will be handling any investigations going forward.

According to Fredric U. Dicker’s April 14 New York Post column on April 14, leading Democrats and strategists are acknowledging that Cuomo could lose, citing the reasons I have outlined now and in the past. I do not, and neither should you, take seriously the threat of leftist leaders abandoning Cuomo. Liberals are liberal first and their agenda supersedes all else. This is not to say that Astorino can see light at the end of the tunnel. What this says is that Astorino winning is not a pipe dream but rather a possibility. What should be taken seriously however, is Cuomo’s decline in support coming from what is left of New York’s middle class.

Projection

When one stands in manure, everyone around stinks. Last week Jim McKean wrote: “Fifty years after Johnson signed his name to that historic bill (Civil Rights Act), the hard reality is that racism is still very much a part of the landscape.” He wrote this without producing one piece of evidence to back up this statement. You the reader are to take this damning statement on faith. Oh, how I wish I were afforded the same latitude.

Does racism exist? Yes. History has shown that there are pockets of people who need someone to hate and blame for their own failings and life choices. But, “very much part of the landscape?” I think not. You see the problem with liberals is that time must stand still. No progress can be acknowledged. To do so would make it harder to keep people in perpetual victim hood. Ironic, coming from the crowd that likes to be referred to as progressive.

Mr. McKean is right when he writes: Polls consistently show that the overwhelming majority of white people think that electing a black president ended racism; while for anyone not white, those numbers are exactly the reverse.”
Let us look at why.

Question: Who is it that continually points out that Obama is our first black president?

Answer: Democrats.

Question: Who is it that says if you disagree with the president and his policies it cannot be on based on substance, but rather racism?

Answer: Democrats, including the recent list of Henry Aaron, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Attorney General Eric Holder, Democrat Congressional Chairman Steve Israel (Long Island) and everyone who works at MSNBC. If people in the black community believe that racism has been exacerbated since Obama’s election, it is because their leaders drill it into their heads on an hourly basis. Victim-hood is so great!

It is the Democrat and liberal who hyphenates people. They marginalize. If racism is “very much part of the landscape,” it is the people who define others by their skin color who are the racists. It is those who love to quote Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech but forget he dreamed of the day when, “People would be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin,” who are the racists.

They keep saying we have not gone far enough. How much is enough?

I, like most conservatives, look at Obama and see the president of the United States. We do not see a black president. The left on the other hand, obviously does. I, like most conservatives, look at his policies—both foreign and domestic—and recoil in horror not because he is black, but because he is wrong and they have harmed this nation. Like most conservatives, I look to lift all people out of perpetual mediocrity, not just the chosen few.

We will achieve enough when all political persuasions accept we are all American and have our own culture. This liberal obsession of balkanizing people based on race, gender, nationality, religion and sexual orientation is madness and destructive.
This is what I say. What say you?
