Bazzo Says: DEFINING THE RACE FOR GOVERNOR: Part 2: The Relevant

TITLE:  DEFINING THE RACE FOR GOVERNOR: The Relevant

Welcome Jim McKean

It has come to my attention that this paper has a new columnist, whose job will be to offer another perspective on the political issues of the day—locally, statewide and nationally. Actually, his job is to be the anti-Bazzo. As a self-professed liberal, one might have thought that was fellow columnist James Martorano’s niche. However, our esteemed former councilman has actually carved out a niche that the readers of this paper have found more informative, especially his interviews with local people of interest. In a local paper, James’s columns add a necessary content that make this a better product then would be without him.

So, joining James and me is a person of true conviction who should offer a perspective that, along with my column, will make you the reader greater participants in the arena of ideas. With that, I welcome Jim McKean. I look forward to a healthy debate.

What’s relevant in the race for governor

Last week I wrote a column (“Defining the race for governor: The irrelevant”) dedicated to those who do not know the Sun revolves around the Earth once a year. It was also meant for those who need a reason not to vote for a Republican to justify why one would vote against their interests. As has been reported, the governor is going to spend millions of dollars focusing your attention on issues that are not going to change, no matter who sits in the governor’s chair—all to ensure you vote for the person with a “D” after their name. As I wrote, the governor cannot run on his economic record, so he will demagogue his Republican opponent, hoping you will vote against your best interests and the State’s best interest, economically.

The Sun revolves around the Earth once a year, it is the basis of our calendar. Now that we have that settled, let us together try to focus on what is relevant for this year’s election. It is first economics, second, economics, third, economics. The fact is the economic state of New York sucks rocks and it is not Bush’s fault nor is totally the fault of the economic policies coming out of Washington. Most of the blame goes to Albany and that you can do something about in November.

So what is relevant?

First off, ignore the polls. The media has already anointed Andrew Cuomo the winner. This is a blue state and so polls will show the governor winning.

Question: Is it really as blue a state as we are to believe? I submit that if one looks beyond the big cities, the state is purple and deep red. So, it will be the job of the Republican candidate to focus resources outside of the big cities. It is a waste of money to try to change the mind of voters who will never vote for you. The focus must be on those who are suffering from the policies enacted by this governor. As our unemployment numbers are higher than the national average by one to two points, here is where the Republican has the best chance to get votes.

When Cuomo ran in 2010, New York was 48 out of 50 states in economic climate. He said this cannot stand, and he was right. He said he would change this, and he did. Latest reports show New York is now 50th in economic climate. The question is, do you think he has steered this state in the right direction? If you do, vote to re-elect Cuomo, but please, wait until Nov. 5.

Under this governor we have gone from the third most populist state to the fourth. Those who have left are those who actually pay the taxes needed to provide the services we expect the government to provide. They have the nerve to believe they and their loved ones should benefit from their labors, so they moved to states that allow reward for risk, unlike New York, which punishes reward as “unfair.”

No matter which hyphenated New Yorker you are, an economic climate that promotes growth by rewarding risk benefits all. Government-imposed minimum wages or paid time off only increases the cost of employing an individual. Businesses are not started to create jobs and give benefits, no matter what you are told. They are started to give the creator the chance to pursue happiness. The employer will only employ those necessary to achieve that goal. Self- interest is not the same as selfish!

Jobs that are created through taxation is not job real growth. If you want real job growth with good paying jobs, then decrease the cost of doing business.  The governor all but admits this with his selected “no tax zones” for business start-ups. The problem is, the governor is trying to pick the economic winners at the expense of others, without taking into account that a person starts a business they think has the best chance to succeed. Politicians do not sign the front of a paycheck.

The question is, if Cuomo thinks fewer taxes are good for some business to flourish, why not lower them for all businesses? It is a proven fact that when business succeeds, tax revenues grow. In fact, people will flock to areas where there is work and there is no need to hide money through creative accounting.

This governor will not do this because he knows the base of power for Democrats is those who depend on government for their existence. His policies condemn people to perpetual mediocrity. If you really believe that those who have nothing are having that stolen by those who succeed, then this governor is for you.

However, if you, like me, believe that people do not have to live in perpetual mediocrity, that a government policy that promotes achievement helps all, then you should vote on Nov. 4. To vote for Cuomo is to vote for continued economic failure. It is to vote for continued flight of those who pay the taxes. It is to vote for a governor who has presided over a culture of corruption that only federal prosecutors have been able to root out. Using his words, if being 48th out of 50 states in economic climate cannot stand, how can being 50th out of 50 states be rewarded with your vote?

This is what I say. What say you?
