:Bazzo Says: Defining The Race For Governor Part 1: The Irrelevant

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS
TITLE:  DEFINING THE RACE FOR GOVERNOR: The Irrelevant

So, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino has announced he is seeking the Republican nomination for the right to challenge incumbent Democrat Andrew Cuomo for governor. It did not take long for the long knives of opposition to come out. The first thrust was dedicated to those who do not know the Earth revolves around the Sun once a year (See my March 13 column: “Explaining Democrats”). The propaganda is that Astorino will neglect his duties as county executive to make his run for the governor’s mansion. Whether this is true or not, the fact is he is not the first incumbent county executive to run for governor. Though from the reporting, one would surely think he is. Astorino is not the first candidate from either party to run for an office higher than his present office, nor will he be the last.

Truth be told, both Gov. Cuomo and Gov. Spitzer were sitting New York State attorney generals when they ran for the governor. Are we to believe only Democrats who hold another office can do two things at once? I really do not remember the outcry from the media when they ran. In fact, the media anointed both of them governor once they made their intentions known.

In fact, it could be argued that if both Spitzer and Cuomo actually paid attention to their elected positions back then instead of running for governor, we would not need the federal attorneys to root out the corruption that infests Albany. The corruption count stands at 12 members in the Assembly and two in the Senate during Cuomo’s term. We won’t even go into the number who have been indicted. These numbers simply represent the number of politicians who have had to relinquish office in the last couple of years.

As I wrote last week we live in a very blue state with a media made up of Democrat stenographers. So, a Republican county executive who challenges the media’s governor will be held to a different—and quite ridiculous—standard.

And now for the second thrust dedicated to those who do not know the Earth revolves around the Sun once a year. It has been reported in both the Daily News and New York Post by their Albany columnists that the Gov. Cuomo is expected to spend $10 million dollars defining Astorino as an extremist. Remember, just a couple months back when Cuomo said there is no room for conservatives in New York. I addressed that bit of liberal open-minded tolerance in my Jan. 23 column, “Hey Cuomo: You Are Not King.” These ads will reportedly focus on Astorino’s positions on social issues such as gay marriage, abortion and the Second Amendment.

These issues for this election ARE irrelevant!

Gay marriage

• Gay Marriage is settled law as far as New York is concerned. More importantly, it was done the right way, through the legislature (the people’s representatives) and not forced upon an unwilling citizenry through the courts, which is the left’s favorite technique in nearly every other state where gay marriage is legal. So no matter what Astorino thinks about marriage, he cannot change the law. There will never be a bill out of both the Assembly and Senate for him to sign that change this law. But, this issue will nevertheless be a deciding factor for those who vote solely on their emotion and not their head (liberals).

Abortion

• Both houses of the legislature passed versions of the governor’s women’s rights initiatives. There were 10. Did women’s rights not exist until Gov. Cuomo came along? Gotta love the names of these dopey bills. The Assembly passed them as one bill, and the Senate passed nine as separate bills. The sticking point was the tenth, where abortion would be allowed up to the ninth month. So, the fate of women’s rights is stuck in the legislature as the Assembly will not take up the other nine without the tenth. Polls show that even among abortion advocates, support for abortion up to the ninth month has about 30 percent support. On a side note, since there are more women in this world than men, logic tells us that more females are aborted than males. Now, if that does not scream women’s rights, I do not know what does. I will not even touch the war on women nonsense…

You see, with the advances in medicine and science a fetus can survive outside the womb from about the middle of the seventh month on. So, we are talking legal infanticide here. This explains the low support for this. We are now talking about viable life, and life is the first unalienable right outlined in the Declaration of Independence. Again, you will not get a bill out of both houses for the next governor to sign. This is purely a campaign issue, and the usual reactionaries on the left will drone on about it, endlessly.

• In Supreme Court rulings going back to the early 1960s, no governor has been granted the power to outlaw abortion or deny access to contraceptives. The issue is who should pay. That discussion has been settled by Obamacare. People can have all the sex they want and it is third party payers who actually get screwed by paying for it. Yay liberalism! Free love is here at last! No governor can change this.

Second Amendment

• The Supreme Court has outlined the parameters where even states can manipulate the second amendment. Under this governor, the limits have been pushed as far as you can go. You will not get a bill out of both houses that circumvents the Second Amendment any further.

Because the governor and the Democrats cannot run on their economic record, they are going to spend several million dollars trying to focus you on these non-issues. Before my critics misrepresent this, I am not saying they are not important issues. In their own way and to their advocates they are. I am saying they as public policy fights, they are irrelevant. Not one of these issues would ever reach Gov. Astorino’s desk.

This is why anyone who bases their vote on these issues is a fool. In this election cycle, wherever the candidates stand on these issues is irrelevant, for they will not be able to do anything about them. I would suggest that if you are inclined to vote these issues, wait until Nov. 5.

This is what I say. What say you?
