NOTE TO GOV. CUOMO, ASSEMBLY DEMOCRATS:
NEW YORKERS DON'T WANT YOUR ABORTION EXPANSION BILL

"Late-term abortion is barbaric, not progressive."

New York, Jan. 3...Radical legislation unwanted by a vast majority of New Yorkers, including pro-choice women, is cynically being inserted into a 10-piece package of legislation called the Women's Equality Act for the second straight year, again proving that the aim of Women's Equality Act sponsors is expanding abortion laws to include late-term abortions and not the other nine bills, which easily could have passed last July, the Chiaroscuro Foundation today said.

The abortion expansion bill being pushed by abortion providers and radical ideologues against the will of New Yorkers would allow abortions in New York right up until the moment of birth for virtually any reason.

"Governor Cuomo and the abortion industry would have us believe that third-term abortions; gender selection abortions, and twin selecting 'half abortions' are all perfectly normal procedures, but we know in our hearts they are not," said Chiaroscuro Foundation President Greg Pfundstein. "Late term abortion, when the life of the mother is not at risk, isn't progressive; it's barbaric. There are nine good bills in the Women's Equality Act that should be passed. The abortion expansion plank has no place in a civilized world."
A statewide survey commissioned by the Chiaroscuro Foundation last January showed that an overwhelming majority of New Yorkers support sensible restrictions on abortions, with eighty percent (80%) opposing unlimited abortion through the ninth month of pregnancy and seventy-five percent (75%) opposing changes in current law so that someone other than a doctor can perform an abortion.

The entire survey, including crosstabs, is available here. Toplines are available here.
According to the survey:
  • A vast majority of New Yorkers believe (78.8%), when they are informed of the number of abortions in New York, that there already is sufficient access to abortion in New York.
  • 75% oppose changing the law so that someone other than a doctor can perform surgical abortions, which this bill would do;
  • 89% oppose abortions for reducing twins or triplets to a single child, and
  • 92% oppose late-term abortions for sex selection.

New Yorkers actually favor of restrictions on abortion:
  • 87% favor providing pregnant mothers information about options before they make a decision;
  • 78% approve of a 24 hour waiting period;
  • 76% approve parental notification when a minor seeks an abortion;
  • 68% approve of providing free medical care to mothers carrying their pregnancy to term, and
  • 86% favor regulating abortion clinics as strictly as other medical facilities.

"This survey tells us that New York women want and deserve more choices, not more abortion," Mr. Pfundstein said.

***MEDIA ADVISORY***
***Thursday, January 9th at 7:00 PM***
SEN. BALL TO HOST 2ND 41 SD CANDIDATES FORUM AT DUTCHESS COUNTY PISTOL ASSOCIATION

[Flyer Attached]

Wappingers, N.Y. – (1/04/2014) – Senator Greg Ball (R,C,I-Patterson), Senate Republican Committee Co-Chairman, will continue the series of Republican Candidate Forums for the 41st Senate District at the Dutchess County Pistol Association located in Wappingers on Thursday, January 9th at 7PM.

The 2nd forum in this series will be co-hosted by the Dutchess County Pistol Association, Dutchess County Republican Committee, Dutchess County Conservative Committee, Putnam County Republican Committee and the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association.

Senator Greg Ball hosted the first Republican Candidates Forum for the 41st Senate District, which includes parts of Dutchess and Putnam Counties, on December 4th at the Putnam Valley VFW. Senator Ball said it is important to start the forums well before the election to give residents plenty of time to get out and meet the candidates and develop grassroots support.

“I am excited to team up with the Dutchess County Pistol Association, the Dutchess County Conservative Committee, the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association as well as both the Dutchess and Putnam Republican Committees to host this vital forum. Starting this series of forums early will help residents get to know the candidates as well as help us rally grassroots support to ensure the 41st Senate District is again represented by a fiscally conservative Senator who is not owned by extreme and dangerous, taxing and spending New York City interests,” said Senator Greg Ball. “This forum will be a great chance for the candidates to introduce themselves to voters across the Dutchess County and build towards a victory in November!”

All candidates interested in seeking the 41st Senate District Republican nomination are invited and encouraged to attend. The public is also invited to attend and hear directly from the potential candidates about their qualifications and vision for a better New York.

“The Putnam County Republican Committee is focused on ensuring the 41st Senate District is won back by a pro-Second Amendment candidate focused on the Hudson Valley,” said Putnam County Republican Committee Chairman Jim DiBella. “Any of our Republican candidates would serve the region better then our current failed Senator, while fighting to preserve our constitutional rights.”

“The Dutchess County Conservative Party is pleased to co-host the Wappingers candidates forum along with Senator Ball and other community partners,” said Dutchess County Conservative Chairman Hal Brilliant. “Senator Gipson and his leftist policies have failed the 41st Senate District. It is time to replace him with a common sense conservative who will help turn NY around.”

What: 41st Senate District Republican Candidates Forum: Wappingers
When: Thursday, January 9th, 2014 at 7:00 PM.
Where: Dutchess County Pistol Association: 47 Saint Nicholas Road, Wappingers, NY.

SENATOR BALL ANNOUNCES CRITICAL SUPPORT FROM GOVERNOR FOR JOBS FOR HEROES PROGRAM
 [Letter Attached]
Albany, N.Y. – 01/06/2014 – Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson), Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, issued the following statement about Governor Cuomo’s plan to support the “NY Jobs For Heroes Program” to help businesses owned by disabled veterans.
“Providing this earned opportunity to our heroes is commonsense but cannot get done without the Governor’s active support. New York state is behind 40 other states that have already enacted this set aside. Two weeks ago, I sent a letter to Governor Cuomo and the Legislature asking them to join my efforts in strengthening job opportunities for our service-connected disabled veterans. The Governor’s public and recent support is exactly the kick in the pants this bill needed to make it a reality. I am very happy to welcome Governor Cuomo aboard our statewide mission to create a ‘NY Jobs For Heroes Program’ in New York State. With his support, I am optimistic that this can be the year we pass this bill to join the nearly 40 other states that offer this three percent contract set aside,” said Senator Greg Ball. “One in seven veterans are self-employed or small business owners. The same attributes that make these people so vital to defending our freedom are the same hard earned intangibles that make them exceptional at running their businesses. We have been trailing the nation on this front for far too long. I urge residents to join our cause and sign the ‘NY Jobs For Heroes’ petition on my website. The time to get this done is NOW!”

Legislators John Testa and Gordon Burrows Elected Republican Leaders at Board of Legislators

It was announced on Thursday that Legislator John Testa will lead the seven member Republican Caucus of the Westchester Board of Legislators for the 2014-2015 legislative term.  Legislator Gordon A. Burrows will continue in his leadership role as Minority Whip.  The announcement came from outgoing Minority Leader, Legislator James Maisano.  Legislators Testa and Burrows received unanimous support from their fellow, Republican Legislators.

Legislator Testa is a lifelong resident of Peekskill.  His public service began in 1999 when he was elected to the Peekskill Common Council.  Legislator Testa went on to serve three terms as Mayor from 2002-2007.

In 2009, Legislator Testa was elected to represent the residents of District 1 (Town of Cortlandt, City of Peekskill and Town of Yorktown) on the Westchester County Board of Legislators.  During his time on the Board, Legislator Testa has served on the Community Services, Environment and Energy, and the Appointments Committees.

In June 2013, Legislator Testa concluded his 33-year career as a professional educator, teaching Social Studies and Technology at Peekskill High School.

Following the announcement, Legislator Testa said, "I am honored to accept the position of Minority Leader for the coming term.  The confidence placed in me by the members of my caucus is one that I take very seriously and I look forward to a productive, positive and collaborative effort for the next two years."  Legislator Testa added, "I would like to thank my predecessor, Legislator Jim Maisano, who served our caucus very well for four years. I look forward to working with the bipartisan board leadership as well as my Democratic colleagues to serve the residents of Westchester County."

Legislator Gordon Burrows will continue in his role as Minority Whip, a position that he has held for four years. Legislator Burrows was a key player when the 2013 county budget was passed by an historic, bipartisan collaboration of seven Republicans and two Democrats.  Legislator Burrows was also very instrumental in positioning the bipartisan coalition to assume leadership of the Board of Legislators for the next term.  In addition to his leadership role, Legislator Burrows serves on three Committees; Legislation, Public Safety and Government Operations.

Prior to being elected to the Board of Legislators in 2005, Gordon spent ten years serving on the Yonkers City Council. For seven years, he was the Council’s Majority Leader. Outside of his public service, Legislator Burrows is an attorney in private practice in White Plains.

After accepting his leadership position, Legislator Burrows said, "I am very excited for the possibilities that this term holds.  I look forward to working with all 17 of my colleagues to tackle the many challenging issues we are faced with.  The word ‘Bipartisan’ is not just a campaign term, it is a commitment to working together, even when we disagree.  It means focusing on our shared goal of governing efficiently instead of our political and philosophical differences.”
