Bazzo Says: A "Fracking" Waste Of Time

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS
TITLE: A "Fracking" Waste Of Time
In a recently published story in another publication, the Putnam County Health, Social, Educational and Environmental Committee met on 9/19/12 to discuss the banning of the waste products of hydraulic fracturing (hydro-fracking or just "fracking") from being used or treated inside Putnam County. Hydraulic fracturing is a process of pumping water mixed with a fraction of a percent of chemicals into wells at least 3,000 feet beneath the surface, considerably lower than the water tables, in order to obtain natural gas.

It seems the waste from this process can be disposed in manners such as spreading on roads in winter to melt snow and ice which can possibly make it to rivers and streams. The prevailing belief is that "hydro-fracking" is "the single greatest threat facing New York today." Those are the words of Ellen Weininger, Educational Outreach Coordinator for Grassroots Environmental Education according to the published story.I guess she has a job, Also does not need gas or electricity.

The other usual boogey-men were also brought up. The danger to our air, water and food supply. I have to ask: what do these people know that the New York DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) and the Federal EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) don't know? I know that these agencies spent four years and over 4 billion dollars to prove that "fracking" is environmentally unsafe and failed to do so. This also included air and water pollution.

I also know that "fracking" is absolutely banned anywhere near the entire New York City water shed. This includes reservoirs in Putnam and Westchester Counties. So why are Putnam and Westchester legislatures' wasting time and tax payer dollars on this topic? Top get face time in the news? To jump on the anti-fracking band wagon? So these environmental groups can justify their existence?

What is know is that it does show none of the above legislatures' have read the DEC or EPA reports. I know they are saying to the souther tier of New York where the actual "fracking" would take place and need the jobs and businesses it would produce "drop dead". I know pandering when I see it.

I also know that the anti-fracking argument is lost by the latest published argument, that "fracking will spread
STD's. Yes, their argument is that the male workers would engage in actions that spread STD's. Yes I know that the Governor has given credence to this argument by ordering a review by Health Commissioner Nirav Shah. I have to ask is this study also going to include the STD affect when they start building the New Tapanzee Bridge? Or is it just private sector workers engaged in this activity?

What I know is that any governing body in the area where no "fracking" is going to take place, such as Putnam County, that deals with these such bans are wasting tax payer dollars. There must be more important issues facing these governing bodies that actually matter. I say that they reimburse to the tax payers that potion of their salary they wasted on this issue. If they want to pander, let them do it on their dime, not ours. This is what I say, what say you?

Bazzo Says:Either Way, District 40 Loses

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS
TITLE: Either Way, District 40 Loses

In a recent press release State Senator Greg Ball (R-District 40) touts these accomplishments in his first term:

● Sponsored and passed “Hannah’s Law” (S5034A) for Yorktown resident Hannah Devane, which requires insurance companies to provide lifesaving medication for eosinophilic esophagitis.
● Sponsored and passed (S3955) Eliminates the registration fee for Gold Star Mother’s and Gold Star Family Members distinctive license plates.
● Sponsored and passed (S5104) Provides for a crime of non-support of a child where a parent voluntarily reduces or terminates employment or fails to seek employment.
● Sponsored and passed (S6090A) Restricts the right of an offender to use a computer in prison or access to the Internet if such offender has been convicted of certain sex offenses and used a computer.
● Co-sponsored and passed (S1883A) Requires health insurance policies to cover comprehensive ultrasound screening and magnetic resonance imaging for breast cancer in certain cases.
● Co-sponsored and passed (S1538A) Provides for transfer of guardianship and custody of infants abandoned pursuant to the abandoned infant protection act.
● Co-sponsored and passed (S3228) Relates to the issuance of military deployment as a factor in the awarding of custody in marital actions.
● Co-sponsored and passed (S6769B) Relates to the duties of providers of mammography services to notify and inform patients if a mammogram demonstrates dense breast tissue.
● Co-sponsored and passed (S7745) Establishes protections to prevent surprise medical bills.
● Co-sponsored and passed (S7638) – legislation that will protect victims of domestic violence and establish stronger criminal penalties to punish individuals who commit acts of domestic violence.

You note that two of these drive up the cost of health care in the form of more unfunded mandates. You will also not that none of these does anything to ease the tax bourdon of District 40 or the State. He may wish to mention the "property tax cap" he voted for, except that was more a specter, all form with no substance. It exempts pensions and litigation which are the driving costs of property and school taxes. There was also no mandate relief of any kind that would have made this "cap" have any real meaning.

He may wish to mention his vote for pension relief, yet this too was a specter. It exempts police and Fire fighters. It exempts present hires. It will have no real affect for at least 20 years into the future. It also assumes that a future legislature will not amend this law as has been done in the past. Why do you think this is called Tier VI?

He may wish to mention his vote shifting more of the bourdon of our medicaid costs to the State. However who is the State? You, that's who. You are still on the hook. Our Medicaid costs are still the highest in the Nation.

Simply put, our State Senator has done nothing, nada, zilch to ease the tax bourdon of District 40, let alone the State. In fact you might say, he has done more to increase the power of the special interests that control Albany.

We in District 40 however have a problem. His challenger, Justin Wagner is just as bad for business, if not worse in some cases than our present Senator. Unlike Senator Ball, Mr. Wagner wishes to increase cost to small business with his wish to increase the minimum wage. As proven the last time the minimum wage was increased, it will lead to less hiring, more firing and hurt the 16 to 29 year olds the most.

Like all Liberals, Mr. Wagner wishes to be judged on his intension's, not the results of his positions. His even more strident than Senator Ball's anti-fracking stance also proves he is not going to help private sector job growth any time soon.

In reality the only thing in Senator Ball's favor is the desire to keep the State Senate Republican in order to in theory, insure two party rule in Albany. Yet the way Albany acts towards the tax payer, is there really any difference between the two parties? The question is this a good enough reason to re-elect Greg Ball? This is what I say, what say you?

Bazzo Says:COSTCO OR COSTC-STAY

Bazzo Says:
BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO
OF YORKTOWN NEWS
TITLE: COSTCO OR COSTC-STAY

Recently, in the City of Peekskill, the reigning government spent two years deciding whether to change the law banning tattoo parlors. On Sept. 4—after countless public hearings—the council finally changed the law. I know this because it was a friend of mine trying to open such a business and the only places he would be allowed to open initially was either a place where no one would go or a place he could not afford.

Most of the people who spoke at those endless hearings centered their arguments on either liking tattoos or not, or whether they liked the perspective owner. Also, the issue of having the tattoo parlor within 500 feet of schools and churches and banning parlors in the business district were discussed.

I spoke before the council and pointed out that they were giving away snowballs in winter. Afterall, they allow tobacco, beer, lottery products and condoms in the business district but not tattoo parlors. It defied common sense. This argument helped carry the day.

Now here in Yorktown, I see the same thing about to happen over a proposed Costco wanting to open near the Taconic State parkway on the 202 corridor. After the Planning Board voted 5 to 0 to approve the DEIS (Draft Environmental Impact Statement) on Sept. 10, (mind you it was only a draft) it is now “Katie bar the door.” There will be the first of endless public hearings starting Oct. 15.

A group of activists with the website nocostco.com has started beating the anti-Costco drums. These antigrowth activists, who can be found to be against any investments by businesses along Rt. 6 or 202, have taken the usual bugaboos out of the mothballs. As expected, they drone on about how the environment, traffic, and local business will all be affected.

One argument goes, “Well we already have B.J.’s, who needs Costco?” Or, “I don’t like Costco or big box stores.”

At the end of the day, who cares what anybody not making an investment has to say?

The reigning boards (planning, town board, etc.) have a duty to make sure all proper codes and laws are adhered to. That’s it! It is nobody’s business to judge whether the business decision is valid or not, be it building Costco or changing the recipe for meatballs at a local restaurant.

I assume Costco invested a lot of time and money studying the feasibility of making money at that location and concluded it a wise investment. That is all that matters! It is not up to governing entities or local rabble rousers to decide the winners and losers in business.

No business—big or small, in Yorktown or someplace else—has a right to succeed. Success is earned and competition is good for the soul. If you do not want a Costco or any other business to succeed, then don’t spend your money there and instead support those businesses you wish to see succeed. That is the only vote you deserve to have on these matters.

I know this because I am part owner of a taxi business licensed by the City of Peekskill. It seems every day the city licenses another competitor. All I or any small independent business can do is try to offer better service at reasonable prices. The reality is that no matter how long someone has done business with a local concern, there are those who will sell you out to save a dollar or two.

Who is anyone to judge that? Unlike government and public sector unions, regular people have to live within a budget and can’t just get a raise whenever they like or raise taxes to make ends meet.

If the proposed Costco adheres to all proper codes and laws, I say, let them open. As for me I will still be a loyal B.J.’s shopper.

That is what I say. What say you?

Bazzo Editorial: JOBS? WHAT JOBS?

Bazzo Says:

BY ANTHONY J. BAZZO

OF YORKTOWN NEWS

TITLE: JOBS? WHAT JOBS?

In full disclosure, I am part owner of a taxi company licensed out of Peekskill.

I say this so you know my job takes me all over the area. Traveling through the various local towns and cities, I notice a preponderance of lawn signs by State Sen. Greg Ball that say "Gettin' it Done.....JOBS!"

Now, this can be interpreted in one of two ways. The first, he means that he has voted for legislation that increase the opportunity for job growth in New York. This is what would be known as living in an alternative universe.

The second interpretation would be that he has passed legislation that has resulted in the decrease in the total number of jobs, but has created jobs that please the special interests who control Albany. This would be the real world.

One is forced to ask "What jobs?" New York is the only state in the union to have a higher unemployment rate this year than last year. This happened on the senator's watch. In December 2011, Sen. Ball voted to raise taxes on high-end earners. The senator explained that these people really did not see an increase because they are paying less than what was first proposed by the legislature. But in reality, New York residents are paying more than they would have had to pay if the old "millionaire's tax" expired without the legislature tweaking it. No matter how you look at it, those people who create jobs or invest in others who create jobs saw a tax increase.

Because he supposedly didn't raise taxes on you, our state senator wants you to thank him with your vote. And he plays the class warfare card just like Democrats like to do despite the fact that many residents either lost their job or have been unable to find a new one.

He also continues to kick the can down the road with his proposed endless moratoriums to prevent hydro-fracking, a process of pumping water mixed with a fraction of a percent of chemicals into wells at least 3,000 feet beneath the surface, considerably lower than the water tables, in order to obtain natural gas.

His stance against hydro-fracking, which has been a proven jobs creator and tax revenue generator in other states, has no basis in science. Our state Department of Environmental Conservation and the federal EPA have spent years and billions of dollars unsuccessfully proving that "fracking" is dangerous to the environment. Because their efforts have been unsuccessful, these state and federal agencies have signed off on this process and now endorse it.

Yet, our state senator, who remains opposed to this process, uses misinformation, scare tactics and false propaganda.

Mind you, other than Assemblyman Steve Katz, who has actually done the research, all our local state legislators and wannabe legislators are opposed to this process, using the same misinformation on which to base their opposition. It is funny that these energy-ignorant legislators all run on the platform of job creation. Yet, hydro-fracking would create many private sector union jobs as well as support jobs and new businesses.

Judging by their votes and press releases, these candidates believe that job creation starts with more public sector workers. I would submit that any job that requires tax dollars to exist is not a created job. It is another burden on an already overly-taxed and regulated populace.

"Gettin' it Done.....JOBS!" Bah-humbug!

This is what I say. What say you?
