Is Peekskill The Home of Racism in 2011?

Dear Readers:

I attended a Peekskill Common Council meeting on 05/23/11. There was taxi business on the agenda and as a part owner of a taxi co. licensed out of Peekskill, I thought it would be in my interest to attend. The meeting was to start a 7:PM with comments from the floor. This was not to be.

I sat for two hours while speaker after speaker monopolized the microphone trying to depict Peekskill of 2011 as Peekskill of the 60's and 70's with rampant racism on the street and in the halls of government. Their focal point was the City Manager Rick Finn, whose head they wanted on a platter. There was also a side story dealing with the Peekskill Housing Authority.

I am not to familiar with all the details regarding the Housing Authority other than listening to Mayor Foster's response, when she was actually allowed to speak uninterrupted, that one problem was remedied in the first week of May and the other after a thorough police investigation backed up in a separate conversation with me by the Chief of Police himself, found no one willing to come forward to substantiate the complaint. One does not turn a whole city upside down on second hand information, no matter the source, without a first hand witness. This is the reality the Mayor tried to impart to the protesters.

On the part dealing with the City Manager, there was some merit. However that is mitigated by the part that after speaking with numerous city employees across the racial and ethnic spectrum, he treats everybody with the same condescension. So if one treats all the same, that does not make them a racist, but a it does a boor. You see the protesters are right in that the City Manager's job should be in jeopardy, but because their view is myopic, it is for the wrong reason. If the City Manager is in trouble, it is not for being a racist, but because his people's skills leave a lot to be desired, and it is after all the people he works for, not the other way around.

As for the question "Is the City of Peekskill a home for racism in 2011?", I think not. No one is denied housing, medical care, employment, service both in the private and public sector because of race. There was a time when this opposite was true. It is an insult to the hard work by those who toiled daily to correct that and on the whole succeed to infer or accuse otherwise.

A couple of side bars to this story is necessary to complete this story. 1) Is that after about a half-hour the Mayor sent the council out of the room for a period of time while she moved to Corporate Council's table to confront the protesters alone. Confront them she did. For a good half-hour she went back and forth with the protesters till most of their steam had dissipated. She should be commended for the way she handled a situation till it was diffused and did not get worse.

The other side bar happened when I got up to leave the room for a few moments and was confronted with a person carrying a sign that read "driving while black a crime", who asked me if I was ever pulled over by the police because I was white.? As a taxi driver I know something about being pulled over. It was not because I was driving a taxi, however if you ask other drivers they might beg to differ. It was not because of my race. It was because I did something wrong. This part of personal responsibility for one's actions was not part of the this particular protesters view. After fifteen years of driving on the streets of Peekskill, I can tell you the city police are color blind when it comes to traffic stops. If you are pulled over more likely then not, they will give you a good reason. Whether you agree or not, well that has been going on since the first person was given a ticket. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

DID OBAMA REALLY CHANGE HIS MIND?

Dear Readers:

After weeks and months of telling us that domestic drilling will not solve our problems at the pump, on Friday 05/13/2011 President Barack Obama directed his Energy and Interior Departments to ramp up U.S. oil production by extending existing leases in the Gulf of Mexico and off Alaska's coast and holding more frequent lease sales in a federal petroleum reserve in Alaska. This on its face should come as welcome news.

The question is what caused this change in tune? A couple of reasons come to mind. First is people are not stupid. Long range goals of alternative sources of energy are a good thing, but it does not get people and goods back and forth today. It does not help people who are financially strapped thin now. People know that tightening supplies or increasing the costs of production or exploration will not lower the price of energy. The increase or promise of increase in supply was the only answer to the problems of now, and now is the only thing that counts.

People eat now. People go to work now. People maintain their homes now. The increased dollars going to these things remove from the economy dollars that would go to other discretionary spending that people and businesses would spend on other items. The increased cost of petroleum brought on by the policies of this administration and the devalued dollar brought on by the policies of the Federal Reserve Board have cause a 14% spike in the cost of food. No person running for re-election could succeed in that quest under these circumstances.

That is the key President Obama is running for re-election and he is not a stupid man. His internal poles showed that he was being held responsible for these circumstances. He was not telling the people what they wanted to hear about the problems of now. He kept talking about later.

So you have Obama saying he wants to ramp up US oil production by extending existing leases and holding more frequent lease sales. However you have a catch that goes unmentioned. The EPA has to approve 'em. EPA can dawdle, EPA can disapprove them, EPA can not take action. It is his EPA led by his appointments. Personally I will believe that he is intent on more oil drilling when he removes the moratorium.
This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

YORKTOWNS UNDER THIRTY GENERATION NOT WELCOME

Dear Readers:
The numbers are in. In a recently published NY1/YNN-Marist poll shows 36% of those under 30 want out of New York. 62% cite economic factors as the reason. For instance, the top 15 counties with the highest taxes are in New York, with Westchester and Nassua Counties as 1 and 2 respectively.

On the job creating end, in which lack of jobs was another highly rated reason of the wanted exodus by those under 30, businesses pay 5 times as much in property taxes over the median state property tax of the private home owner. These taxes, plus other corporate taxes, in addition to assorted fees, surcharges and unfunded feel good mandates, drive out businesses, and discourage investment in new businesses. This is why the lack of jobs for young people exist.

Here in Yorktown is a micro-cosim of this very thing. The Town Board bowing to pressure from people who already have a roof over their heads, has decided not to allow zoning in Shrub oak that would permit apartments over businesses that can provide them. These would have been studio and one bedroom, with no children allowed type of apartments. Perfect for those who are 30 and younger, married or single.

However this is not to be. People frightened of boogie men (read that as section 8 renters) and of course using traffic and environmental concerns, which are always the excuse in Yorktown to prevent property owners of getting full value out of their property, scared their neighbors into pressuring the Town Board. In full disclosure, I live above a business, and have done so since 1992. I, for a time lived in an apartment building. The difference is knowing the landlord. The relationship, the ability to talk about concerns, not with a building manager but the owner is night and day. I would not hesitate to encourage this, and the town board was wrong to succumb to the pressure.

As for businesses and the jobs they would bring, Yorktown is famous for using zoning, environmental and traffic codes to make prospective investors and job creators wary of coming to Yorktown. We could have had Wallmart not Cortlandt. There are store fronts empty and property under-utilized on Rt. 202 because of town resistance and the use various codes to stymie job creation.

Yorktown needs a change in philosophy. It needs to stop being selfish when it comes to the concerns of it's under thirty generation. This I got mine, so spit on you" must stop. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

GOVERNMENT TO TAX THE MILES YOU DRIVE

Dear Readers:

As recently reported in "The Hill.com" The Obama administration has another answer to high gas prices.
It is a new tax on how many miles you drive. According to The Hill.com "The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive." This is because Congress, both parties included, raided the dedicated taxes towards infrastructure, roads and bridges so now there is no money left.

What you may ask, what about "stimulus one", the almost one billion dollars passed by a Democrat controlled congress that we were told would be used for "shovel ready jobs" like roads and bridges? Well that money went to the states and they used it to keep solvent their public sector unions pensions. We were sold a bill of goods. Remember it was a congressional election year last year. Stimulus one and two
really were just slush funds to re-elect Democrats.

This new proposal a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax could be tracked by installing electronic equipment on each car to determine how many miles were driven; payment could take place electronically at filling stations. To think you thought that all those other taxes paid for at the pump were enough. In New York the totals combined taxes amount to 61 cents per gallon.

These funds would be used to create a new bureaucracy "The Federal Highway Administration, a Surface Transportation Revenue Alternatives Office," so you see, another bill of goods. No roads, no bridges, just more government employees.

Here is the real kicker, you get to pay for the device that hooks up to your car to monitor your mileage. That's right you get to pay for the stick they are going to beat you with. The real insidious part is that this devise will allow the government to monitor your movements.

What we have is another way to increase the costs of gas, not supply. Another way to control and monitor your movements. Another expansion of government. I have told you before, this government is waging an economic war against you. This is another example. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

Do You Believe in coincidences?

Dear Readers:

Title: Do You Believe in coincidences?

I don't. For the second time in ten years, a credible Republican, (not to mention Yorktown Councilman) candidate against County Legislator Mike Kaplowitz has been re-districted out of District 4 into Republican heavy District 1. The first time was Councilman Nick Bianco, now it is Councilman Terrence Murphy.

Of course, both times Mike has pleaded the virgin. He says he has nothing to say about this. This is strictly the work of the Board of Legislator's leadership. In fact Mike has been quoted saying about Murphy's complaint that Murphy suffers from "Bianco syndrome". This is defined as when a sore loser creates a "straw dog" (false premise) and then complains about it. However I am not too sure that this premise is totally false. One time maybe, but twice? I think not.

Also during this episode, Mike is developing a bad habit of character assassination. Actually it started during his last campaign against Greg Ball for State Senator. The bulk of that campaign centered on saying in various ways that Ball hates women. This strategy was doomed to fail not because it was false, which I believed and wrote. No, it failed and probably cost him the election because this strategy had been tried every time Greg ran and he beat it back every time. People would ask, so what, how does this save my job or house?

Now Mike has resorted to calling Terrence a "hooligan". This strategy is beneath Mike. I know he is only responding to the moniker "tax hike MIke" or the new one "re-map Kap". However Mike has been in the game long enough to have developed a thicker skin. Also he should know by now how people see him, and nasty only brings him down in the esteem he has with the voters.

Personally I really don't care too much about this as gerrymandering has been around since the first census. Had it been the other way around, the Republicans would do the same. Actually you will see that when the State Senate Republicans get around to their chance at re-districting. After all they have already reneged on their pledge to let an independent commission re-draw the lines. The reality is that to the victor's belongs the spoils. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.

STATE SENATOR LEIBELL BELONGS IN JAIL

Dear Readers:

Former State Senator Vincent Leibell is scheduled to be sentenced later this month in connection with his pleading guilty to two counts that amounted to betraying the public trust. He faces two to four years but in reality he'll face two years at club fed. He is just one of 13 legislators plus one governor who has been caught in legal cross hairs since 2008. Truly a culture of corruption in our state capitol. How did this malignancy be allowed to fester for so many years?

The answer is really simple. We allowed it to fester and grow. As long as they "brought home the bacon" we turned a blind eye to everything else. As you can see we have learned really nothing, in spite of the recent convictions, indictments and resignations coming out of Albany. Look how many people have written the court on behalf of our former Senator asking he receive no jail time. This list included politicians, civil servants and just plain folks. They all have in common the same theme. Vincent Leibell or "Uncle Vinny" cared about so many groups and people and did so much good by sending money to these needy groups and people.

The truth is former State Senator Leibell did nothing. He cared about no one but himself. He along with others in the legislature picked our pockets via taxes, fees, surcharges and doled our money to these others. In return expected he their support and votes. Make no mistake he got both. However it was with our money. We did it all. What he did, and what he plead guilty to was to enrich himself with our money.

He behaved is if our money was his and these letters in his behalf re-enforce that belief. They all act as if his benevolence was pure of heart with no strings attached. No, Leibell belongs in jail for he broke the public trust. No more, no less. He belongs in jail as a message to those still in the legislature that the money in the state coffers is ours to be used wisely, not theirs for the taking.

I can excuse most of the group of writers on the Senators behalf for not knowing better as they have been lead to believe with willing help from the media that those monies came from the state without mentioning they were the state. What is unforgivable are the politicians writing in his behalf, for it means they think our money is theirs. This not knowing or caring about the difference should be reason enough not to send them back to office. This is my opinion, you may beg to differ.
